How to Make Matcha (Green Tea) Ice Cream for St. Patrick's Day
What is Matcha Powdered Green Tea?
Matcha is a premium green tea powder from Japan. Other green teas are grown throughout the world, but matcha is unique to Japan.
What does Matcha taste like?
The taste is complex and difficult to explain. Chlorophyll and amino acids give matcha its unique taste, something like initially vegetal but followed by a delicious lingering sweetness. Experiencing matcha for the first time is like the first taste of dark chocolate or bold red wine. The green tea becomes delicate when added to other ingredients, such as ice cream. Matcha adds a delicious flavor and color of green tea to ice cream.

Matcha green tea has many health benefits. It's rich in nutrients, antioxidants and fiber. It's also sugar-free, so it is ideal when making drinks for diabetics or someone who wants to lower their sugar intake. Matcha exceeds other green tea benefits because the whole leaf is ingested, not just brewed water. Drinking one glass of matcha is equivalent to the nutritional value of 10 glasses of regular green tea!
So, how can you turn a package of plain boring vanilla ice cream into something exotic and delicious?

Matcha (Green Tea) Ice Cream Recipe
Vanilla ice cream
Matcha or green tea powder (available at most food stores)
Allow the ice cream to soften (about 30 minutes). Add a few tablespoons of matcha (depending how much green tea flavor you like) and stir to blend well with the ice cream. The ice cream should turn a light green color and the taste will be totally exotic! At first taste, a slight tint of bitterness might be your reaction, but it will explode into a sweet refreshing taste.
Re-freeze the ice cream, scoop the Matcha into dessert dishes, serve and enjoy!
