How to Maximize the Distance of Your Drive from the Tee in Golf

W. Crew
If you are concerned about distance off the tee, you can make a couple of adjustments to your equipment and your swing that will virtually ensure that you will hit the golf ball farther. You may or may not be able to hit the ball 300 yards by making these adjustments, but you can be certain that you will be getting closer to maximizing the distance you are capable of hitting a golf ball.

First, you should check and update your equipment. It sounds funny, yet it is true that advances in equipment have made it much easier to strike the ball more solidly and at greater distances. Therefore, if you are using your father's old driver, or if the driver in your golf bag is literally more than a two or three years old, you probably need to get a new driver. Technology has improved, and newer drivers are available at 460cc which are extremely forgiving and long. For instance, the King Cobra LD Speed series and the Cleveland Hi-Bore Launcher are two drivers that use the latest technology available to provide distance and accuracy by aiding your trajectory and reducing spin. Further, if you desire more distance off the tee, you should not be purchasing the cheapest golf balls available. Instead, purchase some Titleist Pro V-1's because these golf balls seem to travel almost ten to fifteen yards further than traditional golf balls on the market, and they land softly around the greens as well.

Once you have made any necessary changes in your equipment, you should now tweak your swing off the tee a little bit. First, when you swing, you should imagine that you are actually taking a baseball swing at the golf ball. In other words, the timing of your swing in driving the golf ball should be exactly like you are hitting a baseball off a tee that is just off the ground. You should take a wide stance to give yourself a firm base on your swing, and when you take the club back, mentally picture that you are really taking a baseball swing.

When you do this, you should take the club back at the same pace as you coil and rotate your hips. Your hip coil, your shoulders and arms should remain in the same plane as they are working as one turning unit. Once you reach the top of your back-swing - and in using this approach, your swing may be a little flatter than your normal swing - release and fire your hips, shoulders and arms as you would if you were driving a baseball to center field. Then, allow the club and your body to follow through as you normally would.

When swinging in this manner, it is not necessary to over swing. You can swing smoothly and get the same distance on the golf ball. The key to the swing is the timing of your hips, shoulders and arms acting as one, similar to the swing in baseball.

If you update your equipment and take this approach, you are virtually certain to be driving the golf ball further. With practice at the driving range, you will develop more accuracy on this shot so that you may use it effectively on the course.
