How to Get Maximum Volume in Your Hair

Cindy E. Thomas
If you have thin, flat or lifeless hair, you know how hard it is to get volume in your hair. It's even harder once you manage to get the volume to make it last all day. You need a combination of the right product and and the right approach to styling your hair. It starts with the shampoo that you use, the conditioner, the gel or mousse and the finishing spray. It is a project, but once you have your routine down pat, you'll be able to do it in no time flat, no joke intended!

First, start by washing your hair with a volumizing shampoo. It doesn't have to be the most expensive brand you can find. I like Pantene Volume Shampoo. It gives my hair a light, clean feeling and I can tell when I'm drying it that there isn't a film weighing down my hair. That's what you want, no film on your hair. Use a good conditioner after shampooing. I happen to also have some frizz in my hair, so I use John Frieda's Frizz Ease Rehydrate Intensive Deep conditioner. I only use it on the ends of my hair where it is the dryest but I'm careful to keep it off of the top of my head where it could weigh my hair down.

Once I've washed and conditioned my hair, I use Big Sexy Hair Volumizing gel. Again, this gel has a very light clean feeling and doesn't weigh my hair down at all which is exactly what you want.

Now my hair is ready to style. I use a large round brush and start at the front ,crown portion of my hair. I dry the whole top of my head while rolling the round brush underneath the hair and towards the front of my forehead. I tilt my head over slightly while I'm doing this. This allows the hot air to circulate underneath the hair, giving it lift and volume. Once the top is dry, I dry the sides with the round brush and then the back. To get the curl and kinks out of my hair, I do flat iron it a little, but not on the top, only on the sides. When I flat iron the sides, I clip the upper layers of my hair to the top of my head with a big hair clip. Then, I just flat iron the underneath layers. This helps to retain the fullness in the outer layers. If you do need to flat iron the outer layers as well, do it quickly, just long enough to get the kinks out but not so much that it makes your hair flat and lifeless. After all the flat ironing is done, take your round brush and hair dryer and roll the brush underneath all of your layers of your hair and direct the air from the dryer underneath at the roots for a few seconds. Then use the cold shot button on your hair dryer to direct cool air onto that same area. The cool air will lock in the style and keep your hair where you just had it. Warm hair has a tendency to do it's own thing.

Once your hair is dry, try a product like Big Sexy Hair "(What A Tease) Backcomb in a Bottle". This spray is strong, so put it just where you want it and use it sparingly. Give a quick spritz while lifting up sections of your hair where you want volume. You can definitely get lots of volume from this spray. Once you are done spraying, just finger style your hair where you want it and spritz on a little finishing spritz..
