How to Make a Meal with Refried Beans, Cheese and a Package of Tortillas

This is a Little Bit Different Than Your Average Burrito.

While visiting my mom she clued me in on some very simple and filling meals that you could make for very cheap. I was impressed with one particular meal that my brother had thought of that only involved a can of refried beans, grated cheese and package of six tortillas. On top of being made inexpensively, with few ingredients in it and tasting good it was amazingly filling. I am sure that with these three ingredients burritos come to mind but I assure these are different and I enjoyed them so much that I plan on doing some of them myself.

The first step is to of course open the can of beans and to grate the cheese that you intend on using if you don't already have some that is shredded. One can of refried beans that has about one and three-fourths cup worth of beans is it will make enough for three people. Place one of the tortillas on a plate add about a third of a cup of refried beans. Since you will be doing this six times that will leave you with about a fourth of a cup left over of refried beans, therefore you can add a little under a tablespoon to each tortilla. Smear the beans around tortilla so you cover it entirely on one side. Then sprinkle on the amount of cheese that you want. I would recommend using one fourth of a cup because that is the standard serving of cheese. If you want to add anything else to the tortilla now is the time to do it, such as onions or peppers, but not anything that you don't want to be in the oven. The last step is to roll the tortillas up one by one and line them up on an ungreased baking sheet. Put them in the oven at a mild temperature, about three hundred degrees Fahrenheit, long enough for the refried bean to heat up and the cheese to melt.

The result is similar to a burrito and yet different. You can add salsa, lettuce or what ever else you want to this meal. A serving size of these burrito like things are two per person. When I had two I couldn't believe just how filling they were, I was quite full and I am a big eater. The beans that we used were Rosarita Vegetarian Refried Beans, which were only ninety-two cents. You can find a package of six tortillas for less than two dollars and a cup an a half of cheese can also be found for under that amount. If I had to estimate price I would say that this entire meal cost five dollars and feeds three people. When I make it I intend on using Amy's Vegetarian Organic Refried Beans and a package of Tumaro's Organic Honey Wheat Healthy 8-Inch Tortillas. I am not sure what cheese I will being using mostly but I have a feeling that no matter what the cheese it will be good. I will probably use my own homemade beans as well. I think that it will be an equally big hit in our house as it was in my mom's.

I would recommend for anyone to try this out. It is perfect for children that are not into making elaborate meals for themselves, it was though of by my teenage brother, and for those days when you don't have a lot of time to make a healthy meal. You could easily make these burrito like things with your own beans but this of course would not be as quick as canned refried beans. No matter what route you choose to take I bet that you will enjoy a dish like this very much.
