How to Make Meatballs from Scratch

Jomar Klimber
Although largely known to be an Italian food, meatballs can be found in a lot of dishes in different countries. Meatballs are usually prepared in spaghetti but you can also serve them with soup or simply fry them. You can also mix meatballs with different sauces that fit the occasion. In this article, I will teach you how to make meatballs from scratch.

The basic ingredients of meatballs include ground meat, bread crumbs, eggs and a few spices for added flavor. For this recipe, we will use the following ingredients:

-2 pounds of ground beef
-One and a half tablespoon of spice mix or basil
-salt and pepper
-2 cups of bread crumbs
-Two eggs
-Parmesan cheese

Just a quick note about ground beef:
You can also use ground pork or a combination of pork and beef. For low fat content, use ground chicken or turkey instead. When using chicken or turkey, you might have to add more bread crumbs since they do not get stiff easily.

Once you have gathered all the ingredients needed, you can now start cooking your own meatballs. First, mix the ground beef with the basil or spice mix. Fill up a cup with grated Parmesan cheese then mix it with the ground beef. Add the bread crumbs in it. Add up some salt and pepper then mix the eggs to bind all the ingredients. If the mixture is too sticky, it may need some liquid. You can add some milk if that is the case. The mixture needs some moisture in it yet it has to be sticky enough to hold itself once it is shaped into balls.

Divide and form the mixture into balls for about 1.5 to 2 inches diameter. You can cook meatballs in various ways. You can either fry them, cook them with noodles or soup or you can bake them. One of the easiest ways to cook meatballs is to bake them over a baking sheet at 345 degrees for about 25 to 31 minutes.

If you did not cook the meatballs with soup, you can mix them up with your favorite sauce. You can also use spaghetti sauce or barbeque sauce. You can serve them with rice or noodles. I hope you have fun cooking this food and enjoy eating.
