How to Meditate Effectively

Stephanie Modkins
Meditation, devout contemplation, has several benefits for the user such as low stress. Get the most out of this practice by learning how to use it effectively. Here's how.

1- set aside time.

Set aside at least 20-minutes each day to meditate. Be sure you select the same time each day. This way, your body and spirit are ready to switch gears.

2- find a quiet place.

In order to meditate effectively, you need a quiet space. Go into the bathroom or a bedroom with no phones, TV or children. Then, go to work, free of distraction.

3- Get comfortable.
Relax yourself before meditation by first getting comfortable. Sit yoga-style on the floor or lie on a bed. Let some of the tension go in your body so you are able to focus.

4- Select a focal point.

Meditate effectively by picking a focal point. You can use a sound, word or image. Be sure you choose one that soothes you and easy to capture.

5- Let go of stray thoughts.

As you meditate, other, negative thoughts might cross your mind. Let them flow through and pass. Then, return to your focal point. If you have problem doing this, before you meditate write down on paper everything that's on your mind, so you can be freer.

6- Check your breathing.

Don't forget to breathe as you meditate. Slow your breathing and relax in order to have an effective session. You'll be able to get more in tune with your body and self.

7- Get help from experts.
If you just can't wrap your mind around meditation, get help from the experts. Read books from people who specialize in this area and buy tapes. Meditation tapes can help you relax and learn how to meditate better.

8- Meditate when you're alert.

You can meditate more effectively if you're alert. When you're sleepy, you tend to snooze as soon as you get comfortable. So, pick a time in the day when you're awake and ready to focus.

9- Write down any epiphanies.
Meditation can help you figure out what's really in your heart and solve problems. For this reason, you should write down any epiphanies you have after you do it. You just might learn why you're afraid to speak in public or confront your mother.

These tips will help you meditate more effectively. Use them and get the most out of this practice and improve the quality of your mind and body.
