One of the downsides to GMU is that it is a huge commuter school and they cater to those students. Because of this, you have to be very proactive to get out there and meet people. The nice thing about being a freshman and living on campus is that you are housed in the same area with other freshman. Plenty of people will be outside every night just hanging out. Get out there and meet them. They're new just like you and want to meet people too.
Get to know people in your classes. Suggest study groups or meet-ups to help each other out with homework and projects. Study groups are great to organize when tests are coming up and everyone likes a little motivation.
There are all kinds of activities you can get involved with. If you like sports there are plenty of teams to join. They have a good mix of both clubs and NCAA teams. At your freshman orientation there are tents set up to promote many of these teams. If the team you want to join is not there, you can contact the coach by dropping by the gym across the street from campus.
If sports aren't the right thing for you then join a club. GMU has just about any club you can think of and all of them are looking for new members. You can check their website for what clubs they offer and you will also get plenty of this information during freshman orientation. If there is a club you would like to join but they do not have it, create one! GMU is great about helping you start your own clubs.
Get to know your Resident Adviser (RA). This is the upper class man assigned to live on your floor and help new students with any of their needs. It's the responsibility of the RA to help new students out. Many host events and get together with other RA's to do so. Go to these events, it will be a great opportunity to meet other students.
Get involved with activities, go to events and introduce yourself to your classmates. The campus pretty much shuts down on the weekends so friends will be your saving grace. Good luck and enjoy your time there!

Post a CommentJoin the school paper. That's what I did at GMU. Made great friends, went on amazing conference trips, learned valuable job skills (looked great on my resume) and had a blast. Didn't sleep much though.
This takes me back to my first year at university. I think I met more people in my first semester than I did throughout the rest of my course! People are just so willing to meet others who are new too.
