How to Get Melted Crayon Out of a Dryer Drum

Dina Montgomery
Today is laundry day and you are busy running around getting all your laundry washed, dried, folded and put away. When you discover that you have dried a load of clothes in the dryer with a stray crayon left behind from one of your children. This could put a halt to all your laundry work. This becomes a mess for the clothes and the dryer. Thank goodness there are some simple and quick ways to get rid of the crayon in your dryer so you can resume your laundry duties.

Remove the larger crayon pieces

First you will need to remove the remaining larger pieces of crayon in the dryer. Get a small plastic spatula and scrape off the large pieces of crayon, making sure that you remove as much as possible without scraping the metal. Then you will want to run the dryer for about 15 minutes to heat the remaining crayon that is left behind, making it easier to wipe off later.

Remove the excess crayon stains

Second, wet a Magic Eraser and gently rub the crayon from the inside of the dryer drum. If you don't happen to have a Magic Eraser, using baking soda or a gentle cleanser like Comet will work fine. You will need to make a paste from the baking soda or cleanser with water and apply on an old toothbrush. Using the toothbrush will help get the crayon that is hiding in the holes or cracks in the dryer drum. If any crayon is left behind it will damage the next load of clothes you put in the dryer. This may be a little time consuming but believe me, it is worth it. Make sure you use a circular motion; this will ensure that all of the crayon is removed.

A second method to use

If you have really stubborn crayon stains left behind, you can use WD-40 applied on a soft rag to help remove the crayon stains. Make sure you never spray the WD-40 directly into the dryer, especially if it is a gas dryer, WD-40 is flammable.

Finish wiping down the dryer

After all the crayon is removed from the dryer, get a dish of hot soapy water and douse a soft rag into the solution. Make sure you wring out any excess water from the rag. Gently wipe down the entire inside of the dryer drum to make sure it is clean and that there is no crayon stains left behind. If you do see that you have missed some, just simply repeat the process until it is crayon free.

I hope I never have to remove dried crayon from a dryer. :P I also don't know if I want to know how one learns to use WD40 in this situation and in which manner.
