Allah says in the Qur'an, "And certainly we have made the Qur'an easy for remembrance but is there anyone who will mind?" (Surah Moon)
Allah is the All-Knowing and All-Powerful and if He says that the He has made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, we as Muslims should definitely mind. Alhamdulliah, for easy outlets to memorizing this very important book.
Before memorizing, if you are unable to read Arabic you will want to highly consider taking a short Arabic reading course. Your local masjid may hold free Arabic courses; maybe a close friend can help you learn. You can also try www.islamiconlineuniversity.com. This free online tool is excellent and extremely effective.
With www.isliconlineuniversity.com you can learn from brother Bilal Phillips how to read and write Arabic.
Once you are able to read, you can begin memorizing short surahs. In order to do so, you will want to make intention to Allah to memorize the verses. You will want to you're your intention sincerely for Allah, for Allah does not accept the memorization or actions of those who do deeds to be seen of men. After making intention, you will want to clear your thoughts, and begin seeking refuge in Allah against the accursed Shaitan. If you do not seek refuge, Shaitan will come in and whisper doubts into your heart, making it difficult for you to memorize.
You will want to make sure that you are in wudu insha'Allah. Wudu purifies you and is incumbent on the Muslim when reading from the book of Allah or praying, so make sure that you are purified before beginning.
You will then want to find a quiet place free of distractions. Mothers may want to memorize with their children, however, if you have very small children, you may want to wait until they are sleeping so that you are free of crying or having to stop your memorization process to tend to them.
Now open the Qur'an and begin reciting one ayah. You will not want to exceed one ayat at a time. Practice that ayah over and over until you have. Once memorized move onto the next ayah. Make sure that you have the first ayah memorized before proceeding, you do not want to jump ahead.
Recite aloud. Reciting aloud helps you to hear your own voice and this helps make memorizing more efficient and easy. You will remember easier by hearing the sounds in pronounciation.
Pace yourself. If you know that memorizing an entire surah in one sitting is impossible for you, then don't attempt it. If you know that one or two ayahs a day are all that you can handle then set that as your daily goal. You need to have patience when learning and memorizing the Qur'an. The complete memorization will not happen over night, so attempt to do your best, even it your best is only a little.
Understand what you are reciting. Many Qur'ans are translated over to English, Urdu, Spanish just to name Arabic it is easy to get caught up in the recitation not knowing exactly what you are saying. Recite and memorize the Arabic but always go back and make sure you understand what you are reciting. Try to memorize in your home language too, so that you can not only memorize but you can understand too.
Be steadfast! Continue to practice daily and don't give up. It is easy to have one good week and then go back to your old non-memorizing ways the next. Try to stay patient and consistent. Take at least 10-20 minutes a day to study that ayah and go back over what you have already memorized. You will see amazing results insha'Allah
Teach what you know to others. When you have completed a surah insha'Allah by the grace of Allah, begin teaching it to others. The Messenger of Allaah (sas) said: "The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur'aan and teaches it."
Continue to recite the surah you learned! Do not spend your time memorizing and then not reciting what you have learned. You will soon find that you forget and will have to begin learning again. Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, "By Him in Whose Hand my life is! It runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from their tying ropes." Hold fast to the Qur'an that you know frequently revisiting and never forgetting.
Use technology. Nowadays, we have technological advances to help us better learn and memorize the Qur'an. For instance, I have found that reciting the surah I am memorizing with an online Quari video on Youtube, I am able to better pronounce and memorize. There is also digital Qur'ans that can be purchased and used. Use technology to your advantage. In this day an age there are really no excuses for not attempting to learn the Qur'an.

Post a CommentI have found that the best way to memorize new verses is to say them for every salah as soon as they are memorized in their entirety, instead of the I'm-in-a-hurry "qul hu allahu ahad". :) (That's my favorite surah, by the way. It's a shame that it's the fasted/easiest to memorize, often said in a hurry surah.)
