This set of instructions is primarily for beginners who have just bought a memory stick and want to learn how to use it. The instructions below will show how to insert a memory stick, how to save a document on a memory stick and how to properly remove a memory stick.
I. How To Insert the Memory Stick
- Insert your memory stick into the USB port on your computer. (This is a narrow slot on the front or back of your computer.)
- When it is properly inserted, the stick will light up and a new icon will appear on the task bar of your screen. This icon will look like a green arrow.
- A message will appear that says: "New hardware has been detected." Click on the X to close this box. Now you are ready to use your memory stick.
II. How To Save a Document On the Memory Stick
- Click on File at the top of the page. (This should be the page of the open document you wish to save.)
- Click Save As. A box will appear that says, "Save In" at the top.
- Click on the arrow of the Save in box at the top, and scroll down until you see Removable Disk.
- Click on Removable Disk. (The words Removable Disk will be followed by a letter. This letter will vary depending on your computer. It could be Removable Disk E or any other letter). Removable disk will now appear in the Save in box.
- Now go to the bottom of the box where it says, "File Name." Type in a name for your document in the space provided. For this example we will name the document "English Lesson Plan."
- Click Save. Now the box will disappear and your document will be saved on your memory stick as "English Lesson Plan."
- Go to the task bar on your computer. (This is usually at the bottom of the screen. You may have to scroll your mouse down to see it.)
- Double click the icon with the green arrow. It may say, "Removable Disk" beside the icon, or it may only show the picture. A box will appear that says, "Safely Remove Hardware."
- Click Stop in the lower right hand corner of this box.
- Another box will appear that says, "Stop a Hardware Device." Click Okay. The light on your memory stick will now turn off and you will see a message that says, "Now you may safely remove your hardware." Pull the memory stick out of the slot.
