How Men and Women Judge Each Other Behind the Wheel

Who Drivers More Aggressively, Men or Women? Who is the Real "Lead Foot," Men or Women?

Jasmine Filipovski
Is there an immeasurable difference in the way most men and women drive today? Studies show most men are involved in more auto accidents than women. For every age group, the fatality rate per 100,000 is lower for female drivers than for male drivers. Why? Well, one factor could be that men drive 63% of high way miles driven each year while women drivers drive only 37% of high way miles driven each year. Excessive speed among most male drivers seems to be the larger factor in automobile accident participation each year, overall. Most female drivers tend to drive more defensively and speed much less than male drivers do. However, the most recent, dramatic differences among male and female drivers driving behind the wheel suggest, men speed 58% of the time while women speed 48% of the time. Who is right and who is wrong, here?

There does not seem to be a significant difference, here. This only indicates women are catching up to men in their pattern of driving behavior, speeding behind the wheel of their vehicles as much as men do in high numbers. Why? There are many reasons to take into consideration. However, women experience stress differently behind the wheel of their vehicles than men do. It's not because they want to experience stress differently than men do. Often times most women feel the need to speed more aggressively to keep up the pace with the overbearing population of men drivers. This seems to be a growing trend today among men and women drivers that has simply spiraled out of control, thus creating a "lead foot" society of male/ female drivers on our road ways

* The real reality here is that over 70% of us speed excessively out of control despite gender or age differences in driving behavior behind the wheel of our vehicles, causing over 40,000 plus accidents to occur along with 3.2 million slight to serious injuries to occur per year as well.
* Males are responsible for 45,600 fatalities each year while female drivers are responsible for 15,800 fatalities each year.
* And, unfortunately, men die in car accidents more frequently than women do, especially on the interstate high ways with excessive speed being the overall factor in over half of all fatalities each year.

Most men will often speed through red/ yellow lights, stop/ yield signs and disregard their turn signals more so than women. However, in reality, both men and women have equally lost the true meaning of respect followed by consideration behind the wheel of their vehicles. Both men and women have equally forgotten the true value of human life driving behind the wheel of their vehicles by running red/ yellow lights, stop/ yield signs and disregarding turn signals. Who is the real "lead foot," men or women? Who drives more aggressively, men or women? This is all in the eye of the beholder.

The need for speed behind the wheel of our vehicles has simply spiraled out of control, creating the potential scenario for road rage, leading possibly to a staged auto accident or simply a unnecessary, deadly auto accident to occur due in part to our lead foot addiction behind the wheel of our vehicles. I have some questions for you to think about.

1. While both men and women equally live stressful, busy lives, does it mean they have to speed excessively?
2. Do you consider yourself a "lead foot" on the road?
3. Having the opportunity, would you speed less behind the wheel of your vehicle to save a life, including your own?

Think about it.

I would say if the statistics were stratified to age groups, you would probably find that the majority of male accidents revolve around
alcohol, drugs and the desire for reckless driving for fun.

So true! People don't realize what a huge responsability driving is. Our obsession with immediate gratification...getting there faster...we are more important that the other driver's on the road...seems ridiculous when you put it in perspective. Other people's lives are in our hands. Good article!

I think that you hit the nail on the head here. Although I'm not a fan of L. Ron Hubbard, he did say that the fall of civilization occurs when people stop caring about one another. I notice this every day on the road; people don't look before they turn and they swerve in and out of lanes as though they are the only people on the road. I always drive the speed limit, and I get honked at once or twice each time I get in my car. I don't think it's a question of gender, but humanity, that explains the number of car accidents that occur each year.
