Mixing and Matching-Solid Tops and Bottoms
This is probably the easiest way for a lady to look ultra chic. One of my personal favorite looks is a pair of solid white slacks paired with a short sleeved black t-shirt. This is a very classic look, and the best way to accessorize is by wearing a solid black leather belt and a pair of black high heel pumps. If you want to reverse the colors (black slacks, white top), add a solid black blazer to the mix and wear a pair of solid white pumps (and don't buy into that dated fashion myth that you can only wear white shoes after labor day!) Normally I would add jewelry with some color if I was wearing neutral colors, but with a black and white look, I choose sterling silver jewelry all around. Since the colors of your outfit are conservative and classic, you do not want to hinder the look with brightly colored jewelry. Opt instead for wearing cherry red lipstick and funky eyeshadow. Let your face be your colorful accessory, as black and white clothes are sedate and perfect for having fun with make-up. I also like to paint my nails bright red when I am wearing these colors.
Graphic Black and White Prints
Prints can sometimes be a little more tricky when it comes to mixing and matching an outfit, but the beauty of black and white prints is that they go beautifully with anything. A really hot look for spring 2010 is a large black blazer paired with a print dress, and the White House, Black Market features many models on their home page wearing this look. A white dress with a black print looks fantastic with an over sized black blazer or flyaway cardigan and a pair of strappy, high heeled black pumps or sandals. When wearing a dress in the opposite pattern (black with a white print) add a white cardigan and white pumps. It's the same look, but the colors of the accessories are reversed. Once more, I would stick with classic looking jewelry such as sterling silver or gold when wearing prints, and again it is safe to lay on your make-up a little heavier.
Simple Accessorizing
I adore accessories more than anything. Any fashionista knows that one little belt, scarf, necklace, handbag, etc. can make or break an entire outfit. Accessories are perfect when it comes to mixing and matching a graphic black and white outfit. For instance, if you are wearing a solid black dress and want to interject white into the look, add a large white faux flower pin or wear a strand of chunky pearls with a pair of white sandals. Your look will change instantly with just a few small touches! Same goes for solid white. If you decide on wearing a white dress, add a black belt and pumps with a matching handbag. The possibilities are endless when it comes to these two colors, so experiment and have fun!
You really cannot mess up an outfit that is made of black and white. After all, these are the safest, most iconic fashion colors and are without a doubt the easiest to mix and match. Follow these tips and look at the models on White House, Black Market's website to get ideas on how to mix and match your black and white outfit!
