How 'Modern Family' Can Stay Modern

Julie Wimmer
"Modern Family" is a smart show. It combines a little bit of everyone's life into one half hour every Wednesday night. You don't have to be gay to appreciate it, you can be super masculine and relate to it and you don't have to have kids to get it. With all of its deserved popularity, how can a show like 'Modern Family' stay fresh and modern?

Jay and Gloria
Please leave them be. They are imperfect, bickerers raising an overweight, yet cute and confident child. Jay and Gloria do not seem at all right for each other, and that is why they work. Gloria needs Jay to keep her grounded, and Jay needs Gloria so he can loosen his footing a bit. They are the perfect, unmatched, match.

Cameron and Mitchell
These two are and aren't the sterotypical gay couple. Most people figure there is a "male" figure and a "female" figure, and clearly the show has Cameron in the "female" roll since he stays at home with the child, however, they are both a bit girly when it comes down to it which is part of their charm. Keeping them modern requires a bit more work. I think a wandering eye for Mitchell may keep their story fresh as well as maybe a career move for Cameron which means actually getting a job again.

The Pritchett Family - Phil and Claire and the kids, Haley, Alex and Luke
They are so quirky but so loving which is relatable to a lot of fans. In order to keep this family fresh, the parents need to keep that spark going they still have for each other, even when most couples, at this point in their lives lose it. But there are those who are still so in love, still get that tingly feeling, like they do, after all these years. Keep that going and the laughs and charm will continue.
As for the children, they grow obviously, but the show should keep them young, even if it only means in spirit. The eldest, Haley, is ready for college, but keep her home, at a local college, so there is still that sister competition. And Luke. We love his admiration for his father, even when his father makes mistakes. Phil is "Papa Bear" from the "Berenstain's Bear's," always trying to teach a lesson even if it makes him look the fool. Luke is "Brother Bear," always listening to his dad no matter the consequences. This scenario should be kept going as the show grows throughout the years. It just doesn't get old.

"Modern Family" is a success because it takes a group of people most of us can relate to, whether it be about work, families, loved ones, or kids, and puts them out there for us to judge, laugh at, be disappointed with and ultimately love.

Anyway, Happy Hannukah, Julie if I don't get back before next Wednesday.
Oh, they published that last article of mine about the little Indian girl - she had been emailing me daily and asking, "How come you didn't publish my story on Yahoo?" LOL, if she only knew I was trying!!!!
    Cheers :)
