How to Make Moisturizing, Acne-Fighting Makeup Remover with Milk, Oatmeal

A. Kairi
Many of our favorite cosmetic products do not wash off easily with soap and water, which causes us to need a make-up remover solution. However, while commercial make-up removers are often effective they can irritate and dry out your skin. Many commercial makeup removers also contain toxins that are not good for your skin or for the environment.

Fortunately, there is an easy and inexpensive alternative to purchasing commercial makeup remover products. I developed this makeup remover recipe to remove my makeup while moisturizing my skin; it also has the added bonus of preventing and fighting acne breakouts.

The makeup remover recipe is easy to prepare and calls for all natural ingredients that are inexpensive and easy to obtain.

You will need the following containers and utensils to make the makeup remover recipe: one large mixing bowl; one small bowl; measuring cup; food processor or chopper or blender; tablespoon; jar or other containers with a tight fitting lid and a small plastic bottle with a screw on cap.

You will also need the following ingredients to prepare the makeup remover recipe: 2 cups of non-fat dry milk; 1/4 cup of oatmeal (whole or cut oats, not ground.) and water.

Begin preparing the makeup remover recipe by measuring the 2 cups of non-fat dry milk into the mixing bowl; the dry milk will be the base and main ingredient of the makeup remover. Milk is very good for the skin; it is a good source of protein and lactic acid, which will help nourish your skin. Milk is also naturally germicidal; its presence in the makeup remover solution will help remove dirt and oils from your skin as well as remove makeup.

After measuring the dry milk into the mixing bowl, it is time to prepare the oatmeal for use in the makeup remover recipe. Prepare the oatmeal by measuring 1/4 cup of whole or cut oats into a food processor, chopper or blender and processing the oats for about two minutes. The oatmeal will be ready for use in the makeup remover recipe when a pinch of it floats on water. Oatmeal processed in this way is called colloidal oatmeal and is used in a variety of cosmetic products because it is very good for skin.

Oatmeal's inclusion in the makeup remover recipe will help moisturize your skin while also removing dirt, oils and makeup from your skin. After grinding the oatmeal into a fine powder, add it to the makeup remover blend in the mixing bowl. Use a spoon and stir the makeup remover blend until all ingredients are well mixed.

Once you have mixed the dry milk and the oatmeal powder the makeup remover is ready to reconstitute with water whenever you need to use some. Pour the dry makeup remover powder into the jar or container and snap the lid into place.

To reconstitute the makeup remover powder measure two tablespoons of the powder into a small bowl. Then add four tablespoons of water to the powder and stir until the makeup remover is thoroughly mixed. Use the makeup remover by soaking a cotton ball or the edge of a washcloth in the makeup remover and removing your makeup the way you usually would with a commercial makeup remover.

This makeup remover is gentle enough to use multiple times per day. Store makeup remover that you have reconstituted in a bottle with a tight fitting lid in the refrigerator, it will stay fresh for several days. Store the makeup remover in its powder form in a jar with a tight lid; it will stay fresh in this form indefinitely.
