It's no surprise that today's mom is busier now more than ever before. While some work nine to five jobs others stay at home to personally care for their little ones.

Although employment choices differ one thing is common across the board; every mom desires a little help around the house but unfortunately juggles all of the household responsibilities on her own.

This doesn't have to be the case as there are many age appropriate activities and household tasks that mothers can assign to their children that will not only give her the help she needs but will also teach children important and necessary life skills.

Here is an overview of ways mothers can enlist the help of their children by performing simple activities and tasks starting in the kitchen.

Organization-To teach children organizational skills, mothers can demonstrate to their children how the pantry, refrigerator, and cupboards are organized. Although some children may not be able to read they can associate pictures with items and therefore can group foods and/or items together. Line up items in the pantry, refrigerator, etc., and explain how everything has its own place. Children will see the importance of being organized in the kitchen and will be able to apply their organizational skills to other life experiences.

Planning-Teaching children the importance of planning events, activities, or tasks can be a difficult job however it is possible and much easier when they are taught through hands-on experiences. Mothers can teach children this skill by helping them create and maintain two types of lists; a weekly dinner menu and a grocery shopping list.

Children enjoy being included in decisions so helping them to create a weekly dinner menu will show them that their opinion matters. Mothers can sit down once a week and help their children decide what they would like to eat and when they would like to eat it. This is an easy task that not only helps them feel included but it also helps mothers prepare for one of the most challenging family activities; meal preparation.

Mothers can also teach children planning skills through creating and maintaining a grocery list. This task is great for school-aged children as they have the fundamental reading skills and can manage the grocery list on their own.

It's important that mothers sit with their children at least a week prior to shopping day so they can do a thorough inventory of what will need to be purchased on a regular basis and also what needs to be purchased in order to effectively stick to the weekly menu plan.

Budgeting-Budgeting money is an important life skill that can be taught in two ways; clipping coupons and through shopping.

Clipping coupons will show children how simple it is to save money and because they are performing this task along with their mothers it will also create fond memories for all.

Shopping is another way mothers can teach children to stay within a budget. Since they shop with a grocery list and coupons in hand, children will see exactly the price of each item and how much they'll be saving. This also teaches math skills that are essential for children of all ages.

Cooking-The last way mothers can teach their children and enlist their help is through meal preparation. Since dinner is prepared according to the menu children can perform the necessary skills to prepare each meal. It is important however for mothers to closely monitor their children and only assign age appropriate cooking tasks. This ensures the safety of each person when working in the kitchen.

Mothers should enlist the help of their children at an early age as it will help them to be responsible. While not every child is able to whip up a four course meal many are able to perform simple tasks that will not only help their mothers but will teach them skills that they will utilize in the future.
