How to Make Money from Your Ideas and Inventions

Sarah Rachel
Making money from your ideas is possible with hard work and a consistent effort on your part. Write down your inspirations and develop a plan. Even if you have the most spectacular idea, you won't make any money from it unless you develop your idea and take action. Educate yourself about the market in which you are interested by reading related books and magazines, networking and researching informative sites such as the U.S. Small Business Administration (sba.gov). Also, your local Small Business Administration office may offer free business classes.

Freelance Writing

With the expansion of the Internet, the freelance writing market is wide open. Local businesses and corporations hire freelancers to write press releases, manuals and much more. The need is huge because nearly every business advertises to stimulate growth and profitability.

If you want to make money conveying your knowledge through instructional articles or simply by expressing yourself, take a few writing classes and begin preparing samples of your work. Get your feet wet by writing for websites that pay a small fee for content or page views, for example, Examiner.com.

Subscribe to an association such as writersmarket.com to get updated listings of publications looking for writers. When you first begin writing, you may need to write articles for small magazines for generally lower fees than you would make as an experienced writer. Write your ideas down in a notebook and develop stories based on what you think would appeal to the magazines.

Read books about freelance writing and learn how to formulate a query letter. Many magazines hire writers solely based on the article ideas outlined in their query letters. Writing a query letter that sells takes practice, so don't be disappointed if your first query is not accepted. Part of this business is rejection.

Also, don't get so attached to your words that you are unable to change them. Revision is essential and any piece of work can be improved. Use advice from editors to learn and develop your skills. Editors are basically really talented writers. They can see potential and turn an average piece of work into something spectacular. Never underestimate editors--their advice is like gold.

Inventions

You can make money from your inventions. All inventions stem from an initial idea. If you have ideas about gadgets, beauty products or food itemsthat you feel are marketable, begin developing your idea and then move on to a prototype. A prototype is a physical example of your invention. You will need to invest in the materials needed to build or create your prototype or sample. If your invention is something simple like a honey-infused wrinkle cream or a specialized food product, you may be able to make it yourself.

To actually make money from your idea, you will need to create your own business or sell your invention to a company that is willing to make the product and take care of marketing so that other people can also enjoy your creation. However, your invention or idea is not going to sell unless there is a real need for it.

Surveys and Focus Groups

Another way to make money from your ideas is by participating in focus groups and surveys. Companies advertise survey opportunities in newspapers or on the Internet. Many local businesses and even major corporations seek opinions from the everyday people who use their products and services.

A focus group is a small group of people who share ideas about how to improve a particular product or service. The fee for surveys and focus groups varies. Some simple surveys pay only $5.00 to $20.00, but you can earn $50 to $250 for participating in a focus group. Look in the paper and on line for opportunities like this in your area.
