How to Make Money Near Military Bases

T. Jay Kane
Anybody who lives near a military installation will tell you that their community is special. Their community is saturated with heroes and pride.

Living near a military installation also offers a very specific business niche. Military members often require special services unique to their profession. Below is a list of some easy to set up home businesses that are perfect for the military town.

Resume Writing Service: Help a transitioning veteran compete in the civilian work force by translating their military skills to competitive civilian equivalents.

Uniform Services: Offer pick up and drop off service within a certain geographical boundary and place an ad in the base newspaper for convenient uniform alterations and repair. Military members constantly have to update their uniforms if they work in especially dirty jobs.

Car Babysitter: The military is full of young and single folks far away from home who need a good place to store their car when they get deployed. They could leave the car on base but nobody would be around to turn it on once a day and keep an eye on the tire pressure. If you have an empty lot or some garage space, offer to store the car of a deploying service member. Most military members will be able to deploy with a check book and can send monthly payments via U.S. mail. Most insurance companies will allow the service member to lower their payments while the car is being stored. Offer to start the car every so often to keep the battery alive and make sure that the member has an operational car to come back to. This service may carry more liability than the others on this list, so check local requirements for storing another person's property for money.

Taxi Service: Get your taxi license and drive the troops around town on weekends. Their work is hard and they like to unwind after a long week. Offer to be their on-call designated driver.

Legal Services and Advice: Military members are governed by their own sets of laws. If you have any legal experience you can act as a military legal consultant or specialized attorney.

Ordained Minister: When two people want to tie the knot, no amount of space should stop them. Becoming an ordained minister with the legal authority to marry people is a rather simple process in most states. Offer your services as a specialist in dealing with distance weddings. These weddings can be performed over the phone, web cam, or satellite.

These are just some ideas. Depending on exactly where you are located you may be able to think of even more services to offer.

This is an innovative article! I hadn't thought of offering car sitting services to military personnel.
