How to Make Money on Second Life as a DJ

Christopher Blydenburgh
There are two major industries at this moment in the virtual world of second life, sex, and dance clubs. I personally rather avoid the sexual garbage on this community, so the next best thing to do in this virtual world is to go to the clubs. And believe me there are many of them out there. These clubs range from oldies and jazz to dirty rap and hard rock and everything in between. All of these clubs are here to try to make some money. Therefore, they all have one thing in common; they need DJs to work for them.

And this is the start of making money in Second Life. If you have a passion for good music and you are not afraid to be the center of attention in real life than this is the gig for you. In most cases, the clubs will only offer to pay you on a tips only basis. This means that you put out a tip jar and only make what the club goers put in the jar for you. This is ok if they give you 100% of your tips (some try to make you split your tips 80/20 with them, don't do it) and the club has a lot of members and decent turnouts to their events.

Now you need some basic equipment to get going. A desktop computer with decent graphics card (needed for the animations within this world) and a good sound card. You will also need to buy a decent quality headset with microphone. This way you can hear what's going on, the music you're preparing, and talk to the crowd at the same time. To get on the Internet, you must have broadband speed internet connection to continue a steady communication and sound stream that can keep up with the program. The most important thing you need is music. This will help you to build a huge collection of music so you do not bore the crowd with the same old songs every twenty minutes. The last thing you need is broadcasting software, I recommend that software I use called SAM Broadcaster, it has a fourteen day demo so you can get started right away with your DJing gig before you have to pay for the software.

Now you are all set to broadcast and DJ in Second Life. Take a slice of personal experience; do not take a gig without doing your homework on the club and event runner. I have joined to clubs as a DJ recently. The first one was deleted from the system the night after I was hired to work there. The second one I am at now, no one shows up to no matter how hard I try to market the place, the theme was a mistake and it has no one interested in coming, so I am making no money here.

Once you have found the right place, you will make some money as a DJ in this world. Granted I get $200L tips from people sometimes, but remember that is USD that's only about $0.72! Keep in mind, Second life is a great place to practice real life skills that could develop into a real life career. This is basically my reason for DJing on this world. I want to work as a DJ in real life soon. Good luck!
