How to Make Money Spring Cleaning Your Home

MICHELE E. GWYNN
Spring has sprung and you find yourself wanting to open all the windows, let the fresh air in, but you look around and see ...clutter! It's time for spring cleaning but what will you do with all your stuff and how can you make it a profitable experience?

Old CD's and movies, along with that stack of hardback and paperback books can earn you cash by simply taking them in to a half-priced book store. You can earn $1.50 to $3.00 per book and your CD's and movies, just a little more. Some stores let you trade in for different books and CD's while others might give you store credit. Mostly, they pay cash for books, CD's and movies that you no longer have any use for and this will help eliminate clutter in your home.

Do you have clothes that no longer fit, have gone out of style or find you just don't wear them anymore? Take them in to a consignment shop. As long as they are in good shape and clean, many second hand consignment shops will let you try and sell your items in their store for a nominal charge (taken at the time the item sells). You are given a specified time period in which to sell your items. At the end of that time period, if they have not sold, you can pick them up.

What do you do with these clothing items that didn't sell? Hold a garage sale! While you've been cleaning out other items, such as old comforters, lamps, pieces of furniture you no longer utilize, unused dishes, rugs, and wall art, gather them all up in the garage and schedule a weekend to hold a garage sale. To make it all worth while, invite family members or a neighbor to participate in the event with you and you can split the cost for the city permit entitling you to hold the sale. Garage sales can be quite profitable and remember one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Old appliances that you need to get rid of? Take them to a second hand appliance store. These appliances, if in reasonably good shape and functioning, can be fixed up and re-sold. You would be paid for the appliance in the condition it currently is in when you bring it in. It's not a get rich quick idea, but it puts cash in your pocket and gets the item out of your garage or off you lawn.

Do you have an old junker of a car taking up space in your driveway? Not enough money to fix it? Sell it to a junkyard. If you can tow it in, junkyard owners will pay up to $500 (maybe a little more depending on the year and shape of the vehicle). Junkyard owners sell off the parts from the car and you get cold hard cash and a clear driveway.

These are just a few enterprising ways in which to make money off your old junk and spring clean your house all in one "clean sweep". With the house cleaned and all that extra cash in your pocket, you can afford to treat yourself to something special! Happy Spring!
