How to Make Money With Used Children's Clothing

Having children in the home usually entails having large amounts of clothing (besides toys) to store in the attic, closets, and crawlspace. As the children get older, storage will most likely become an issue and you might find it necessary to get rid of these clothes if your days of having more children are over. Why not earn a return for all these clothes you spent money on? The ways of getting compensated for the clothes are numerous and the transaction of selling good quality used clothing will benefit the buyer and seller.

Garage Sales

Most people look to unload bins of used baby or kids clothes through a neighborhood garage sale. This is a great place to sell and draw immediate buyers to your goods. Your clothing should be set at a price that you are comfortable with provided that the items are not tagged ridiculously high. If you do not have a good idea for pricing, it might be a good idea to exercise due diligence by taking a week or two before your own planned garage sale to see what other neighborhood garage sales are selling their used kids clothing for. Be wary of the higher end items that will command better dollars. Higher end brands would be considered clothing sold by Gymboree, Heartstrings, GAP, etc will definitely command a higher price than lesser known generic brands. If you feel you have a good supply of kid's clothes, but not too many other items to sell, it might be a better idea to sell your clothing via a friend or neighborhood hosted garage sale.

E-bay

E-bay is a really good way to get your used kid's clothing advertised and listed. The trick to listing clothing on e-bay is getting your clothes to sell at a price that will pay for the listing, shipping, and leave you with a nice profit in the end. Take caution by knowing what your possible shipping rates could be and set the shipping costs accordingly. Do some research and look at current listings on e-bay for your same product to understand appropriate pricing as well as shipping and handling costs. Also consider selling your used kid's clothing in "lots" which may consist of three to five outfits in one listing. This process is used regularly when e-bay sellers are listing children's pajama sets or jeans. Just make sure you know your market when selling more upscale items.

Resale Shops

Resale shops will usually be glad to take the items off your hands for a small return. I would probably use resale shops as a last resort when trying to earn a decent return on children's clothing. These resale shops usually carry tremendous overhead to operate their business so they may undercut you by offering very low prices for your goods. However, certain brands that you offer might be low in their inventory so and they may pay you a decent price.

Those items that have a tough time selling or remain unsold should be donated to a local charity where they will benefit some other child or even be sold to earn money for the respected charity. Just don't forget to get the appropriate charitable tax forms when donating the merchandise so you can increase your deduction when filing your income taxes in the upcoming year.
