Choosing Your Subject: Write on topics of interest to you, and choose only the subjects you have the most knowledge on. (This may seem like common sense, but I have read many articles written by people who clearly have very little knowledge on their subject of choice, and you probably have, too.) If you don't know more than your reader, it will be obvious. Consider a topic, and if you don't think you know more than the average reader, move on to another subject.
Brainstorming and Search Engines: Once you have a general topic or subject matter in mind, brainstorm until you have at least ten good ideas. Think about titles first, and the ideas for content will come. Get online and start entering phrases into a search engine, wrapping your phrases in quotations (for example, for writing this article I might have used "make money writing articles online", "secrets to making money writing articles online", "get paid to write articles online", "write articles for pay", or "get paid for articles"). Not only may this sort of brainstorming potentially inspire great ideas, but you will also be able to get an idea of how your article might potentially rank in search engines. Most online article buyers are purchasing articles to be used on websites, so they will be more likely to buy an article containing good keywords and phrases. Don't throw away your notes! You can use them in future articles!
Personal Style: As an online article writer, your instincts are as important as your knowledge. Writing articles for the internet is different from writing a thesis paper or a business report. Your readers do not necessarily want formality. Your writing should flow, and it helps if your article isn't full of grammatical and spelling errors. Come across as knowing your audience and your material, and you'll do fine.
Proper Format and Special Guidelines: Before submitting your article for publication, or listing it online to be purchased, make sure to proofread. Always check your spelling, wordcount, and general format. Articles should generally be between 500-700 words. Basic format for online articles is a double-space between paragraphs, and single-space everywhere else. Make sure to read the guidelines on sites you plan to submit to, and make the appropriate adjustments, before submitting. It would be a shame for your otherwise perfectly good article to be rejected based on your inability to follow directions!
Your writing may feel awkward at first, and your words may seem to come to you much more slowly than you'd like them to. If you don't give up, you'll see it gets easier with each new article you write. The more you write, the better you'll feel about it and the easier it'll get. Not to mention, the more articles you write, the more money you'll make.
