How to Get More Miles Per Gallon in Any Vehicle

Many will state that the way to get all around better gas mileage is to get a more fuel-efficient auto. Of course, while this is true, there is another very large fact being overlooked about gas consumption - the fact that the driver has a very large part of the fuel consumption responsibility. While getting a new car may improve the gas mileage over the other, chances are, you may still be burning through more fuel than necessary just because of your personal driving style. And don't worry - this happens to a lot of people. The following methods are proven ways to reduce the amount of gas needed to get from point A to point B.

Don't drive so aggressively.

This is one of the biggest flaws that people have when it comes to consuming large amounts of gas. The more aggressively one drives, the more gas they consume on a same-distance trip. Don't slam on the gas at the intersection, don't make unnecessary swerves, and do not fight so hard to pass someone that is going slightly slower than you may want to be going. These types of things not only stress you car, but make the engine and other parts work harder than necessary, and the result is a larger consumption of fuel. If you want to save the money, you will learn to drive in a more calm and traffic-oriented manner. There is no need to drive offensively.

Speeding does not save gas.

In fact, the faster you go, the less miles per gallon you will actually get. Cars burn more fuel over a shorter amount of time when going faster. Sure, you're moving faster as well and the distance will be greater, but is it worth the greatly reduced miles per gallon of travel? Go the speed limit. Going under will get you in trouble, and going over (a little) will cost you some gas money, while drastically over will cost you gas money and tickets. Worth the 5 minutes reduced drive time?

Use the cruise control.

Sometimes it's not necessary to constantly change your speed. The car has a feature that allows you to lock this speed in. This will slightly improve your fuel economy because not only does it keep you from often going over or under the speed limit and then applying more gas than necessary to correct, it causes you to often look further on down the road because as a driver, you have nothing better to do. This will cause you to react to things more steadily, since you have had more warning. This alone will improve fuel economy.

Let the car warm up for no longer than a minute or two.

There is no reason to allow the car to idle in your driveway for 5-30 minutes every morning, as it is fully heated after just a few and anything more is just burning additional gas. Why would you want that? Besides, if you start driving, the engine will heat up more, and your car will become warmer much more rapidly for no additional cost. Also, if you're going to have to stop the car for more than a minute anywhere (while talking to someone on the side of the road, etc.) just shut the car down. You will consume less gas stopping it then starting it after than to allow it to idle for the entire duration.
