Learn about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - this basically means making your site get visitors from search engines. Make sure your site design is clean and does not have more code than needed, try to avoid tables and frames. Make your site easily accessible, and include anything to help search engine robots e.g Alt tags for Images and Text. Make sure the site loads quickly and does not make a user download something, or automatically re size a users browser window.

Pick Meta Tags very carefully, find one search that you would like to be number one on Google for, then work at it, place it as much as possible, but it must belong there, you cannot just put the phrase everywhere otherwise you will get penalized by Google and will be worse off in the Search Engines. Update your site regularly, keep people coming back, it is all good and well gaining new visitors but you need to make those visitors come back. Make sure your content is unique and not just copied from others.

Contribute in a Link Exchange Program, this involves your link being put on a website and you return the favor, the more links you have to you site, the higher your page rank, which is very important. The more back links the better, if a site with a high page rank is linking to you, this will dramatically improve your page rank.

Contribute in forums relating to your website topic, but do not over promote your site, visit other peoples and they will visit yours, start interesting topics, reply to topics and people will visit your site.

You must always know your target audience, do not try to aim at everyone, pick an audience and work on this, and if you are successful you can aim at another audience, but do not be greedy.

Another good idea is to use Content sharing sites, such as Technorati, if you have interesting content people will read it and share it with their friends.

Pay Per Click advertising is also very effective, but you basically pay for visitors which is not ideal for some, but the people that do visit will be interested in your content, because that is what they searched for.

Use Social Networking to promote you site, but again do not over promote. Twitter is the most effective way as you can post links and people will click them, if the content interests them. People are constantly searching for posts, so if someone is looking for A celebrity they can see all posts with that celebrity mentioned, so if you have posted a link about this celebrity people will click.
