How to Get More Zzzz's at Night

You would think that getting a good night's sleep would be so easy, but for some people getting a good night's sleep is anything but easy. So what's a person to do? Here are some tips to help you get a good and restful nights sleep.

Consistency is key to getting a good night's sleep. One may think they will "make up" sleep by sleeping really late after staying up too late, but you can never make up sleep. It is important for you to be on a schedule and wake up and go to bed at the same time everyday.

Stay active! Exercising on a regular basis and staying active during the day will help you to be able to sleep better at night. Laying around all day and doing nothing will only hinder you getting a good night's sleep.

Against going what most people feel they need, I would advise against taking an afternoon nap. Taking naps will give you energy and will keep you awake longer and may keep you from going to sleep once it is bedtime. When you feel sleepy I suggest to get up move around and get active.

For some people taking a nice warm bath gets their body ready to rest.

Avoid drinking any kind of caffeinated drink before bedtime. Say no to that cup of coffee or soda you think you want. Caffeine can keep you up! Avoid alcoholic drinks too.

Some people sleep better with some sort of background noise. For as long as I can remember my sister has always slept with a fan going. It helps her sleep better.

The temperature in your room can also make or break a good night's sleep. For me, if the room is too hot I cannot sleep at all. Of course even being too cold can hinder sleep, but I have always thought if it is too cold you can always pile on the blankets. Not much you can do when it's too hot.

Can drinking a glass of warm milk really help you sleep? According to the website Webmd.com there is no actual data that proves that warm milk will help you sleep. They suggest that drinking a glass of warm milk each night may just be a routine, or habit, something you are familiar with. But who knows! I think the jury is still out on that one! Source: Webmd

Avoid that late night snack. I have always heard to stop eating about 2 hours before bedtime. This gets your body time to digest your food. It may also keep you from having heartburn if you are prone to having it.

Read! Reading a good book will put your mind on something else and help you get ready to sleep. I am also a Christian so I suggest reading the Bible or praying. Seems the devil will always put you to sleep once you start doing that!

One more tip: turn off the tv and radio. I know a few people who like to sleep with the tv on or the radio. I think turning it off will give you a much better night's sleep.
