How to Make the Most Basic Repairs Easier and Faster

Keeping Your Workspace Organized

RH
One mantra that has made my DIY life easier is "a place for everything and for everything a place." One thing that I was able to bring from my years of aviation maintenance was organization. You can easily translate this over to all of your nails, screws, and other consumables. One of the best ways that you can do this is to use a fishing tackle box. You can often customize these in several different ways and they come in all different sizes. The drawers can be custom designed in a number of ways to fit your needs. That is only the beginning. There are many things that you can do to get your workspace organized.

The first step of getting your space organized is to map out your tools and parts. You need to plan how they will fit together. If you just throw them together, you will use a lot of space and still have a sloppy looking area. You can help to maximize your area and make things easier to find. The use of silhouettes on the wall or in your tool box drawers is a great way to get started. You can also instantly tell if anything is missing or forgotten. It is very easy to forget some of your tools, especially the smaller ones. By having silhouettes in your tool drawers or on the wall, you can tell at a glance if you have forgotten anything.

One of the most important ingredients of this whole concept is the consumables tackle box. This is a spare box (fishing tackle boxes work great for this) that you can fill with all of your extra nails, tacks, and other small items that you use on a regular basis. You may want to arrange them by the jobs that they are used for. The top shelf should contain things that you use all the time like super glue, tacks, and other things. For screws and nails, you can leave them in the boxes and store them either on the side or in the bottom of the box. You will want to arrange the shelves in the order of how much you use the items. If you do a lot of electrical work, you may want your wire connectors and tape within easy reach.

Whether you arrange your tool box or not is your option but by having a small tackle box filled with your odds and ends can save you a lot of time. You can also take it with you rather easily. You can just take the whole box to your project and all of your consumable hardware will be right there in easy reach.
