Having a yard sale is hard work. If you have had yard sales in the past, you know what that means. If you have never had a yard sale but you want to, be aware that it is not always fun and games. It cannot be overstated to say that if you have a yard sale from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., you will feel like you have been assisting customers all day long. Hard work, however, will be your friend in the end when you count your day's earnings.
After you have found out what your local laws are regarding having a yard sale and after placing all the necessary ads, how you actually set up your yard sale and manage it is what is going to determine your cash count at the end of the day. These tips deal with the actual holding of the yard sale before and after you know the regulations and have placed your ads in order to get the most money from your items.
1. Make your items as attractive as they can be. Fold or hang clothes neatly, place like items together such as dishes or clocks or whatever it may be, make sure there is a plug in near by for electronics, have a TV turned on if you are selling one are all examples of making your yard sale attractive. Use tables; borrow them if you have to. Have a yard sale with a friend who has tables is another way to help with your own items. Nobody wants to be crawling all over the ground looking for items and besides, they won't.
2. Some nice music in the background will help customers feel comfortable, much like in a grocery store. It's just nice to have that background noise and it helps friends or husbands and wives are able to discuss purchases in sort of a private environment. This doesn't have to be some classical music and it definitely shouldn't be so genre specific that you will scare off little old ladies with heavy metal but a nice middle of the road music that can appeal to everybody should be utilized.
3. Display some of your more interesting items at the end of your driveway or yard to entice people to stop. This is an especially good tip if there are men going to yard sales. Have tools, mowers or other things that would interest men in a more visible place
4. Have everything priced! There is nothing more frustrating than having to barter for every little item at a yard sale. Use stickers that are available at the local office supply store. It takes work but it's worth it. If you are selling larger items, use a larger price tag. Would you look for a tiny dot price tag on a big bicycle? No. Use a large piece of paper so your customers can see it.
5. Last but not least, have a lot of change. It hardly ever fails that if you have what you think are enough $5 bills, your first 2 customers are going to spend 50 cents and use a $20 bill to pay for it. It is imperative that you have enough change.
Using some great tips like these, you are sure to make your next yard sale a hit. If you have never had a yard sale but would like to, utilize these tips and expand on them so that your first experience will be great making your next ones even better.
