How to Get the Most Out of Your Evp Recordings

Voices of Disembodied Spirits Caught on Audio Devices

Lisa Hoskins
What Is Evp?
Evp stands for electronic voice phenomena- the voices of disembodied spirits caught on audio devices. These spirit voices caught on audio are not heard by the naked ear, but are heard when the recorder is played back after being taped in a supposed haunted location.

Equipment For Capturing Evps
The standard equipment used for capturing evps are audio recorders, both tape recorders and the newer digital audio recorders. If your paranormal group has audio recorders then you are off to a great start in capturing evps and doing evp research! But is having a recorder enough, or is there more to it?

Some Thoughts On Evp Recordings
Some people think that if they have an audio recorder and just 'plop' it down anywhere in the building where they are trying to capture spirit voices, they will get great results. "If you press record, they will come".

Sometimes this method will work, but many times it won't . Try to remember that spirits in theory, are people without physical bodies. They are just like you, only they are not subjected to the cost of rising gas prices! (Sorry, thinking out loud for a second there!)

If you walk into a room where a party is going on, and not one person says hello to you or acknowledges that you are present in the room, how would you feel? Exactly...Now switch gears back to you and your group while you are using your recorders to get some awesome evps. If you are a spirit, and a bunch of people come into a room and turn on a recorder without acknowledging you, are you going to speak to them? Ah ha! I didn't think so. So in remembering that spirits are suppose to be just like you is something important to keep in mind while you are trying to get them to speak!

The Best Techniques For Evp Recordings
So what is the best technique for capturing spirits on tape? Since paranormal research isn't an exact science just yet, these are of course just ideas to consider. One group is testing out various evp research methods and shares their information on their website, AAEVP.

When doing your own evp research with your group, don't be afraid to test out new methods. Think out-of-the-box and try out new equipment and new methods. Many times simply by acknowledging the spirits you are trying to talk to and asking them questions, you can get some great results. Remember to keep questions simple, and pause after asking each question to give them some time to respond to you.

Since spirits are just like you, they like to join in on conversations with larger groups of people! Don't think that you will only get evps if everyone in the group is quiet and hush hush. Paranormal research is an exciting adventure! Don't get stuck with methods that other groups are using, or that you feel are the only way. This is your group! Be creative. Think outside that huge box. Take some time to do your own experiments. You might be pleasantly surprised at the results.

  • Being quiet doesn't always mean you will capture spirit voices.
  • There is an evp classification system in place.
