How to Get the Most Out of Your Next Doctor Visit

Brooke Coin
No one really ever has fun going to the doctors. Many people complain endlessly about their health care providers. They don't give you enough time, the wait is too long, there is too much paperwork, and the list goes on. But great health care calls for the cooperation of all parties, including the patient. Keep the following in mind when you next visit your MD, and maximize your fifteen minutes with him or her.

Complete all the Paper work you are Given as Fully as Possible.
The office staff doesn't like all those forms either, but they are necessary to provide the doctor with all the information he needs to begin treating you properly. In addition, to make certain that your health insurance will cover the visit and you will not be stuck with a bill, the staff needs all your current and correct information to bill for you.

Tell the Dr exactly what Ails You
No physician has a crystal ball. Be as clear and concise as possible when describing your current symptoms, however insignificant they might seem. If a doctor is aware of everything you feel is wrong, he has a better chance of treating you successfully.

Listen Carefully and Ask Questions
It is important that you listen carefully to the advice and instructions the doctor gives you. If you have a question or concern, do not be afraid to voice it during your appointment. It can be hard to reach your doctor by phone later for small concerns, so try to address them all while you are face to face.

Follow Instructions
If your Dr tells you to stay in bed, do just that. If he prescribes a course of medication to be taken for a certain number of days, finish the course, even if you are feeling better after just a few doses. This is especially true for antibiotics, as failing to complete the prescribed course of treatment can make the drugs less effective the next time you might need them.
