Personal trainers can be great but there is quite a bit of time, effort and money required on your part so a little forethought can go a long way. Here are some questions to ask yourself before you hire a trainer.
How much time am I willing to spend?
How much money am I willing to spend?
What are my goals and are they reasonable?
Am I more comfortable with a male or female trainer?
What certification does the trainer have?
Is the trainer on board with my goals and present abilities?
Meeting your trainer before signing anything is highly recommended to ensure compatibility and professionalism. If you are expecting a large, well muscled man and your trainer turns out to be a nineteen year old , gum chewing party girl you most likely won't get the results you are looking for. This is not saying that you can always judge a book by its cover but getting a feel for your trainer before you put out the cash is definitely a good idea.
Communication with your trainer is very important. Yes, they are hired to push and motivate but it is vital that your trainer is receptive to your feedback. Are they in agreement with your goals? It is crucial to avoid injuries so being able to tell your trainer that a certain exercise is uncomforatble or you are hurting is tantamount to your success.
Don't be shy. Ask your trainer for proof of certification. Do a little research online, there are several types of certifications and many different levels. Some certifications can be recieved with little or no direct instructor contact. While you can learn many things online making sure your trainer is well versed in his or her trade will ensure you get in shape injury free. This will help ensure you get what you are paying for.
Ask your prospective trainer how they plan to take your goals and turn them into reality. Are they able to formulate an effective training plan designed around your needs and abilities. Beware of cookie cutter mentality. The same workout schedule that works for one client may not fit the needs of another. Discuss your individualized plan ahead of time and be cautious of a trainer who does it ''on the fly''. This is not something you want them to be making up as they go along.
Keep these points in mind and you are well on your way to a new , fitter you!
