How to Make the Most of a Yard Sale

Cee Belair
Yard sale season is almost here- and if you love a good bargain, there are plenty to be found! There are really only two different kinds of yard sales, ones where people are trying to earn money, and the other one where people are just trying to get rid of junk. The main goal is to find the second kind!

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your yard sale day.

1. Grab a newspaper and a map and plan out your route. This will save you time instead of driving around wondering where they are and looking for signs. By having a detailed route, you can hit the most yard sales in the least amount of time!

2. Leave your kids at home, if you have to take them, use an umbrella stroller to make it easier. Give your older kids some pocket change and let them have at it. Bring snacks or games for the car to keep them busy. Try to limit your yard sales if you do have your kids with you, they will get bored and the drudgery of climbing in and out of the car will get to them.

3. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Pick a lightweight jacket or pants that have pockets to throw change in, rather than carrying around your pocketbook. You should also have a bag with you to carry your purchases.

4. If you see something you like, pick it up and carry it around with you while you browse the other items. You don't want someone to come in and scoop it up while you're not looking!

5. If you see something you really like, but it's a little over your price range that you're willing to spend, politely ask if they are willing to negotiate on the price. If not, leave your name and phone number so they can contact you later on if they change their mind.

6. Try and leave early in the morning, stuff won't be as "picked over" and you'll have the biggest selection. Another good time to go would be late, as sellers don't want to re-pack all of their stuff.

There are a lot of great bargains to be found at yard sales. While a lot of people don't like to admit they shop there, chances are they do. Just remember to check over your items before you purchase them, sometimes they can be damaged or stained - after all, it is a yard sale!

My son and I found a rummage yesterday and I got him nine pairs of pants, some of them dress pants, for 25 cents each!! I love rummaging, I only wish I had more time to go hunting...
