It is especially important to create an environment that feeds contribution towards the larger goal. This attitude should be embedded in the company culture. This is especially important to small businesses. If your company has a contribution culture you will all be able to feed off each other's loyalty. The entirety of your staff will feel put together into a single holistic movement.
The ability for your business to maintain a culture relies upon the ability for your business to have an open relationship with other people in your company. This doesn't necessarily mean that all your business associates have to be the bests of friends but they should be able to act like themselves around other people. Try scheduling social events for your company's employees. Social team builders like a paintball and baseball are great ways to build community type relationships with people who work at your company. Building bonds among many people is enough to make a want to work harder from the company.
One of the biggest changes in management style is the realization that money is not a good motivator for people doing creative work. In fact it has been discovered that if you are not doing menial thoughtless work then incentives are practically useless. This was shocking news! The realization that you cannot just throw money at people who have a creative job should change the way your business is done. In other words if your employees are involved in creative work then you have to find a new way to motivate these people.
To motivate people like this you will have to be able to provide fulfillment. If they are working in a job they love they probably already feel as though that you are an avenue for their fulfillment. Provide them with enough salary and resources to reach fulfillment in their chosen profession and you will reap the benefits of having properly motivated
The key to be able to motivate employees is all through having a proper company culture. With a culture that promotes unity and creativity is what allows people to be motivated to take the next step.
