Motivation is what drives us to do things, commitment is what has us continue and succeed. You need to find out what motivates you personally and what will help you stick to a routine in the long run. Then you will have success! Here are suggestions on how to motivate yourself to start exercising.

Visualize your goal. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to be fit? Imagine how that would feel and how you would look with a tight body. Get out that old photo of when you were in better shape and put it on the fridge.

Know more benefits of being fit. Since you will have more energy and likely feel happier all around being fit will also help you to get motivated and to accomplish other things in life.

Dress for success. Put on your running shoes and have an outfit ready for your fitness routine. Wearing that new stylish workout gear will put you in the mood to get moving.

Start out slow. You are not in shape yet, so no marathon run on your first day. Build up your workout time and increase your exercises steadily when you feel stronger. Overdoing it in the beginning is de-motivating.

Make exercising your reward! Consider the time you work out your free time. This is when you get to take a time-out for yourself.

Have a friend or partner join you and make regular dates. You can motivate each other and you are more likely to stick to an exercise routine when you have to meet up with someone.

Get in free exercises. Walking stairs, cleaning and household chores are exercise, too. Bagging up and loading your own groceries instead of having a store employee do it for you is also a workout.

Listen to music. Exercising to the beat of music can be energizing.

Watch TV. Yes, watch TV. I you are using any type of stationary exercise equipment in your home you can decide to exercise for the duration of your favorite TV show while watching it. This will help you stay on a schedule and it helps pass time.

Think positive. Just because you haven't exercised in a while doesn't mean you failed! If you can't make time three times a week then do it once. Continue from where you are now. Every time you work out is one step closer to your goal.

Join a fitness club or an exercise class of your choice. Now that you paid for it you are more likely to go work out.

Exercise your way. You don't have to run if you love to swim. Working out should not feel like a punishment or obligation. If you chose a sport or activity you like most it will be fun. Many activities we do for fun are exercise. It is easy getting motivated to have fun.

Rotate activities. Don't get caught up in lame, monotone exercise routines that you dread doing, mix it up. Do what you feel like that day or schedule different work-outs for different days of the week.

Write it down. It is easy to forget how much you have already accomplished. Putting a check mark on your calendar each time you exercise gives you a visual of your accomplishments to keep you motivated. You don't want to throw away several weeks worth of workouts to get back on the couch and get out of shape.

Make it public. Tell your friends and family that you are starting a new workout routine this week. They are likely to ask you how it is going for you next time you see them. You don't want to say that you quit.

Now think of all the things you can do to exercise and get started! A few examples for fun things to do are swimming, walking, jogging, aerobics, dancing, roller skating, resistance-training, playing ball games, riding a bike and so on.
