How to Get Motivated to Write

Sass Ashe
One of the hardest parts of being a writer is getting motivated to write. For writers who are telling a story such as fiction writers or novelists the motivation to write is there in their heads with the storyline pushing them to get it down. For freelance writers who work writing web content, the motivation can be somewhat lacking. Rather than telling a compelling story filled with personalities and excitement we often find ourselves writing "how-to" articles or basic technical web content. While we need to earn money and know that the way to do so is to write web content for paying sites, the motivation to do so can be hard to come by.

Turn on the music. By playing music while you work you will often find that the articles flow faster and that you even type to the beat. This allows you to get even the most boring and mundane work done while enjoying your favorite tunes. A consistent play list of your favorites can be set up at Pandora Radio so that you don't waste valuable writing time searching for songs to listen to.

Participate in motivational challenges with other writers. During the first part of this year I participated in a challenge to write 100 articles in a month. The support and competition with other writers kept me motivated to do all of my mundane writing tasks. There are several of these challenges that online freelancers participate in, so keep in touch with other freelance writers for the support and challenge to keep typing.

Think of the articles you are writing as a blog. This works for me to keep the creative juices flowing. I try to claim several articles about the same topic, or choose a topic to write about and create several different titles that fall under that topic. It doesn't matter if the articles will be submitted to different sites, what matters is how working on a group of articles can help you stay motivated.

Stop writing! When you just can't seem to get the words to flow, when your ideas seem to have flown out of your head; step away. It is important to know that if you can't produce your best work you could be sabotaging your own income. So if you need to take a break, do it. Go outside, visit a social network, or just relax for a while. When you get back to work after a break you will find that you are more able to focus and stay on task.

How to Get Motivated to Write #5

Write something else. I have found that if I am having trouble writing an article assignment it does me a world of good to write something different. Whether that is a blog post, a bit of fiction or just an article on a different subject I often find that I can write something else, and then come back to what was slowing me down and be able to write it quickly and easily.

Motivation comes and goes, but when a writer is counting on producing a certain number of articles each day it is important to work through the issues that are slowing them down and get back on task quickly.
