If you have the time I would start making preparations early. A few years ago we knew we had about a year or so before we would be moving. I used that time to really get organized and prepare for the move. In this article I share with you some of the things that I did to help our move go smoothly.
The first thing I started doing was going through the different rooms in the house and getting rid of stuff. You know, "stuff". The stuff you haven't used in like two years. Stuff you probably will never use again. You can do one or two things with the "stuff". You can store it all and have a yard sale before you move or you can give it to a charity such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I have done both. Whatever works for you.
My main purpose in going through all of our things was I wanted everything in our new home to actually be things we used. It still surprises me even now how much new stuff we have accumulated. I can't count the trips I have taken to Goodwill since we have moved. It is funny how that works!
Of course you want to make sure you have plenty of boxes. If you have plenty of time it is so much easier to get things packed. You can work on one room at a time. Good labeling is the key. For example, when I packed the things on the computer desk I wrote, "top shelf of computer desk". I knew that the box held the things that belong on the top shelf. It made it so much easier. Do this with all the boxes and you won't have to rummage through a ton of boxes to find what you are looking for.
Once the boxes are filled you will need to find a place to stack them all. I found an empty wall to stack them all against. If you don't have one you may need to make one.
There are also other items of business that you will need to take care of before you move. Now depending on how far you are moving from your current residence depends on how much will need to be done. You will need to contact your phone company, all utilities, and credit card companies. You will also need to contact all of your magazine subscriptions. If you are moving far away from where you are currently living you will need to cancel your bank accounts and start new ones. I am better to remember things if I make a list of what needs to be done and mark them off as I do them. This may also work for you.
A good idea as you are moving is to have a basket of the essentials. It is so frustrating when you are moving and you can't find any toilet paper, paper towels, etc. It is a very good idea and also very handy to have certain things all together. Have toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, cups, plasticware, snacks, hand wipes, toiletries, and any medications. You may can think of other things that need to be added to the list.
I hope you have found these suggestions helpful and will help you with your move and make it easier on you.
