Moving is always stressful, however well prepared you are for each move. Many people decide to stay in a hotel until their household goods arrive, but there is no need to spend a fortune on hotel costs for the next two weeks as you await the delivery of your household goods. There are ways to move into your new home that will save you time and money even before the removal van pulls up to your front door.

Forward Basic Necessities Ahead of Time

Once you have your new address, you can start to make some firm travel plans, including kitting out your new home before your shipment of household goods arrives. Collect together some basic necessities that you will need within the first few days after you move in such as a blow-up mattress with a pump, pillows, lawn chairs, towels, TV trays, cutlery and crockery and forward these items to your new address.

If you have friends or family living in the area, send them a key and have them collect your parcels for you so that they are not left outside your front door by the postman. But if you are moving far from friends or family, find out how long it will take for the parcels to be delivered to your new address and send them so that they coincide with your move-in date.

Switch on the Utilities Before Moving In

Moving into an empty, dark home and eating off a cold, bare floor is not much fun, even if you try to make the most of "camping" indoors. Before you move in, switch on the gas, electricity, water and other utilities so that when you arrive you can take a shower, turn on the lights and start to turn your new house into a home.

All it takes is a simple phone call to the utility companies and they will do the rest for you. Tell each utility company when you will be moving in and arrange for the utilities to be turned on a day or two before you arrive.
