How to Move a Queen Split Box Spring

Maxwell Payne
A Queen size bed is the size smaller than a king size bed. While most beds King size or larger have a boxspring that comes in two equal pieces as the boxspring, those Full or smaller have a single boxspring piece. Queen size beds however can come with either split boxsprings (like the King) or a whole one piece boxspring. While you can't split a whole boxspring and continue to use it you can however move a Queen sized boxspring in two pieces if it came manufactured to be separated.

Remove all bedding. Lift off the mattress and place it to the side. Skip this step if you aren't moving an boxspring from an existing bed frame. Be careful of furniture, people, or other items nearby when moving the mattress. Consider asking someone for help as mattresses can be very heavy.

Inspect the boxspring for a single seam running down the middle. This indicates a split box spring.

Grasp one side of the boxspring and lift it up and out of the bed frame. The split boxspring is actually two pieces, as you lift one side you'll see the boxspring halves separate.

Remove the other half of the boxspring. Carefully pick up one half and carry it upstairs. Repeat with the other half.

Place both halves down into the bed frame upstairs. Be sure any frame slats are in place or the box spring will fall through the frame. Make sure the outer sides of each half are inside the bed frame, otherwise there will be a gap between the two halves causing them to slide around.

If you know the mattress and boxspring will need to be moved through a tight and narrow area such as stairs or a small doorway purchase a split box spring in advance. While a mattress can be bent and folded to navigate tight corners, a boxspring can not.

Do not attempt to physically cut a whole boxspring unless you are doing so to move it out to dispose of it. Unless the boxspring came in two pieces, a whole one can not be cut in half and used again. Cutting a whole box spring in half will permanently damage the box spring and make it unsuitable for use.
