How to Move and Resize Windows with the Keypad with FreeSnap

Use Short Key Functions to Avoid the Hassle of Manually Resizing & Moving Windows on Your Desktop

M. Samson
Don't you hate manually moving and resizing the windows on your desktop to the desired positions and sizes you prefer? There is a free and simple solution to this petty, but antagonizing problem. It's a new software application called, FreeSnap. FreeSnap allows Windows XP and Vista users to automatically resize chosen window edges to the corresponding screen edge. I gave FreeSnap a try and I was amazed that the software really worked as good as the makers claimed. Blue Onion Software released FreeSnap June 2009. Windows 7 has similar functions built in with the software, so Microsoft Windows 7 users wouldn't really need this freeware. FreeSnap has hot key functions which use mainly the windows key and keypad, but the number keys work too. Give it a try to experience the ease, first hand, that FreeSnap brings to the table.

Download FreeSnap at: http://blueonionsoftware.com/freesnap.aspx or Download.com. Like the name says it's free so you might as well take advantage of it. Blue Onion Software also offer PC tips and other free applications, downloads, and updates to software on their website blueonionsoftware.com.

Simply install it after the quick download is finished. It only takes up about 1.57MB of space, so the software goes light and easy on your system.

All you have to do to enable it is by going to your start menu, find FreeSnap under your programs menu directory and click either "Start FreeSnap" or "Stop FreeSnap". Or you can have it enabled to run as soon as you start up your computer. I don't like having too many programs run at start up, so I disabled FreeSnap manually using; the System Configuration Utility (click start, run, and type - ms.config) to use it as I please.

Tips

The Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys are the "Corner Keys" because their functions include moving the window to the corresponding corner of the screen while keeping the windows size.

On the number pad, plus (+) and minus (-) keys will change the dimension size of a selected window to
640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1152 x 864, 1280 x 1024

If you want to add or remove any sizes you can do so by editing the FreeSnap.cfg file in the application folder.

Pressing the "5" key on the number pad will center the window on the screen without changing its size.

Pressing Win+Arrow key=Arrow key will size any window to half or quarter half. Pressing the second arrow key will pull the opposing edge of the selected window to the center of the screen. It works just like Windows 7 but uses keyboard shortcuts.

Pressing Win Key + CTRL + Arrow key + Shift + Arrow key will shrink & grow an edge by 10 pixels.
