1. Purchase a red sweatshirt and red sweatpants in your size.
2. Obtain a pair of black briefs. You will wear these briefs over the red sweatpants, so you may wish to purchase a larger size than you would normally wear.
3. Find a yellow belt - either online or at a thrift store. You will wear this over the bands of the black briefs and sweatpants. Make sure the fit is comfortable, as you will be wearing this for the evening. When you put the costume together, if the belt has an obvious buckle, you can wear it with the buckle in the back. If you can find a yellow sash, or two-inch yellow ribbon, this can work as well. Here's how to make the belt if you are using a ribbon and you have some sewing skill. Purchase a package of elastic. Measure around your waist with the ribbon - the ribbon should be snug (it won't fall off) but not too snug. Cut the ribbon to size. Once you've done this, cut the elastic shorter than the ribbon. Pin the elastic to the ribbon and center the elastic to the ribbon. Sew down the middle. Sew the ends of the ribbon together. A third way to create Mr. Incredible's Belt is to attach (either with glue or by sewing) the ribbon to the waistband of the black briefs.
4. You will want to find a pair of black calf-high boots. This can be done at a thrift shop, an army surplus shop, or online. You may even be able to find a pair available at a costume shop.
5. You will also need a pair of black gloves or gauntlets that will cover the edges of your red sweatshirt.
6. You need to create the
Incredibles logo that occurs on the jumpsuit. This can be done in a couple ways. If you don't mind sewing projects, purchase fusible interfacing, black scrap fabric, yellow scrap fabric and white scrap fabric. Using a drawing as your guide, cut out the pieces of fabric, and attach them to the shirt following the instructions on the fusible interfacing. If sewing projects scare you, but you can paint, purchase fabric paints in black, white, and yellow. You will want to paint the yellow and white sections in a few layers to keep the red from shining through.
7. There are two options for the mask - you can purchase a black party mask, or you can use black face paint. Make sure if you use face paint to paint up to the eyebrows and down to the cheekbones in order to duplicate Mr. Incredible's mask.
8. Mr. Incredible wears his hair brushed back and towards the top of his head in a pompadour. You can achieve this look with hair gel. If you like, you can purchase colored hairspray (orange or yellow is good) and use this to create the desired effect.
9. Have fun! Part of the fun of Halloween is being creative with your costume!
