How to Get MSN Messenger on Linux

ssb
What "MSN"?

MSN is a popular instant messaging service; it is officially called "Windows Live Messenger" by Microsoft.

In the case of MSN, the server belongs to Microsoft, the protocol is invented by them, and the client software is usually "Windows Live Messenger."

To chat with other users of MSN from a PC running Linux, you must install software that uses the MSN protocol and connects to Microsoft's servers.

Good news is that such software exists!

aMSN

This client aims to completely replace Windows Live Messenger. It is the one that supports the specifications of the MSN webcam protocol, audio chat, file sharing, deferred messages, nudges etc.

It has many skins and language packs for foreign users.

emesene

Another good piece of software dedicated to MSN.

This client also supports other instant messaging protocols such as ICQ, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber etc.

Kopete is another multi-protocol alternative which is very highly customizable and takes a new approach to instant messaging.

Text mode

For those who want to use MSN Messenger in text mode, there are CenterICQ, a client that also supports ICQ, Yahoo, AIM, IRC, Gadu-Gadu and Jabber.

Yahoo Messenger for GNU / Linux. Available only for RedHat, Debian and FreeBSD

Installation

To install one of these IM clients, it is better to use the package manager of distribution.

Problems

Some features are not available (winks for example)

The MSN protocol is not "open", meaning that the source code is not available to developers. In addition, the protocol changes sometimes, which makes the task even more difficult for developers to write free clients.

If you lack a function, you can:

* Help developers learn how the MSN protocols works,

* Wait until it is implemented,

* Ask the service provider MSN (Microsoft) to provide the information necessary for its implementation,

* Use another messaging protocol.
