How Much Should an Engagement Ring Cost?
Price Myths, Budgeting for a Ring, and Choosing an Engagement Ring in Your Budget
Averages, Two Months' Salary, and other Cost Myths
According to different bridal magazines, jewelers, and diamond industry experts, the "average" cost of an engagement ring in the United States ranges from $3,000 to $4,500. For many young couples, however, this price tag is simply unrealistic when they may have student loans, rent, credit card debt, and other expenses to consider at the same time.
Then comes the myth of the "two months' salary" rule. Legend says that a man should be able to afford to spend a full eight weeks of his salary on a ring for his beloved, just to demonstrate his love for her and his ability to provide for her. While many couples buy into this idea, literally, it makes little or no sense in today's society. Many couples begin their marriage as equal partners, often with two careers. Does this mean that the ring should then cost the equivalent of four months' salary? Not at all. The cost of the ring should be relative to one thing only: the couple's budget.
A budget is not a salary, and it is not an average of what other couples are spending. A budget is a couple's assessment of their financial situation and a reasonable agreement on what the price of the engagement ring should be.
Yet some couples will persist in thinking that an expensive ring demonstrates more love and a more stable financial future. What a high price tag indicates, however, is an eye on numbers rather than the meaning behind the ring. The ring's price and its significance are completely unrelated. Granted, some couples are fortunate enough to have larger budgets and can then afford more expensive rings, but many couples simply overspend at a time in their lives when they can least afford to do so.
Budgeting for an Engagement Ring
A couple who budgets for an engagement ring has a keen understanding of the importance of staying out of debt and discussing major purchases together. By discussing the price of the ring together before it is purchased, they get firsthand experience with one another's spending habits, as well as a candid glimpse into how each individual views highly visible status symbols. If they can come to an easy agreement on the cost of the engagement ring, the couple will demonstrate their ability to communicate, compromise, and plan for their future, abilities that will be invaluable when they are newlyweds.
When deciding on a budget for an engagement ring, several factors must be considered.
- Life Expenses: Couples who already have substantial credit card or student loan debts, high rents or mortgage payments, and other expenses need to put those factors first when setting an engagement ring price. By eliminating debts and controlling expenses, the couple can lay a firm financial foundation for their life together rather than drive themselves deeper into debt for a shiny ring.
- Ring Design: The ring design should ultimately be up to the bride-to-be, because this is a piece of jewelry that she will wear for years and it may eventually become a family heirloom. Choose a ring style that she finds beautiful but that is also practical for her lifestyle, hobbies, and activities. A large, elaborate ring, for example, is not a wise choice for a woman who is very active in sports, gardening, or other very physical activities where the ring could be lost or damaged.
- Ring Value: The quality of the ring, including the four Cs (cut, clarity, carat weight, and color) as well as other parts of the ring purchase package must be considered. It is well worth paying a bit extra for a maintenance plan that covers damage, resizing, and stone loss, but it may not be worthwhile to pay extra for a diamond that is supposedly better quality because a piece of paper declares it to be so, even if the quality differences are not immediately visible.
Price Privacy
Once a couple has chosen a ring that suits their budget, they are under no obligation to share the price tag with anyone else. Whether the ring cost $50 or $5,000 is irrelevant to the love, consideration, and commitment it represents. Should the couple be bombarded with questions about the ring's price, they can simple answer that its cost is immeasurable because it shows their love, which is priceless.
So, in the end, how much should an engagement ring cost? It should cost whatever the couple is comfortable affording without extraordinary debt or hardship. For some couples, that may mean large diamonds and elaborate pave settings are out of the question, while other couples may be able to spend days browsing through designer jewelers' cases. The key is to remember that no matter what the price, the love the ring represents is still more valuable.
