How Much More Popular is Celebratory Holiday Christmas Vs Thanks Be to Almighty God Thanksgiving?

Joe Dorish
Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the most popular holidays in the world today. Thanksgiving is a festive celebration in which people give thanks to almighty God for the blessings bestowed upon them each year. Christmas is also a festive occasion celebrating the birth of Jesus the son of almighty God who would die on the cross to atone for human kind's sins and provide the path of enlightenment for all who believe.

Both holidays are wildly popular events and both mean a break from work and the daily grind of life to stop and reflect upon why we are here, what we have and where we are going. Obviously since Christmas is celebrated around the world and Thanksgiving is mainly an American holiday Christmas is more popular. But how much more popular is Christmas than Thanksgiving?

To answer that question I ran both holidays through a number of internet websites to see what kind of results would pop up. These are the results.

Google Search

Christmas - 283 million

Thanksgiving - 37.1 million

In the Google search engine Christmas generates 7.6 times the number of results that Thanksgiving does.

Google Keyword Tool

Christmas - 30.4 million

Thanksgiving - 2.24 million

The Google AdWords Keyword Tool shows how often a word or phrase is searched for each month online. Christmas is searched for 13.6 times more often on a global monthly basis than Thanksgiving is.

YouTube

Christmas - millions

Thanksgiving - 192,000

The YouTube search engine only goes up to a million and then just reports millions of results. So Christmas is at least 5.2 times more popular on YouTube than Thanksgiving is but the number is probably closer to 10 times or more.

Amazon

Christmas
- 1.3 million

Thanksgiving - 41,000 results

Christmas has 31.7 times the number of results on Amazon than Thanksgiving does. Not too surprising since Christmas is a gifting holiday and Thanksgiving is more of a food holiday.

Allrecipes.com

Christmas - 3,187 recipes

Thanksgiving - 1,913 recipes

Since Thanksgiving is about food and Christmas is about more than food I ran both through the recipes search engine on allrecipes.com. Christmas still beats Thanksgiving but only by 1.7 times more recipes.

So How Much More Popular is Christmas than Thanksgiving?

The overall results from the Internet show that Christmas is 7.6 times more popular on Google, searched for 13.6 times more often than Thanksgiving, at least 5.2 times more linked to videos on YouTube than Thanksgiving is, turns up 31.7 times the number of items on Amazon and has 1.7 times the number of recipes on allrecipes.com. Combined the results from these websites show Christmas to be 12 times as popular as Thanksgiving.

I'd say that number is about right with kids but with adults the number is much lower. Many adults have told me they prefer Thanksgiving to Christmas because it is not as commercial. But Black Friday after Thanksgiving is the most commercial day of the year in the United States.

Personally I love both holidays and probably do prefer the actual Thanksgiving Day meal but the religious significance of Christmas combined with the fact that I really consider the Christmas holiday as starting on December 25 and ending after New Years means I do prefer Christmas by a wide margin.
