Decomposing?
Juice boxes take many years to decompose in landfills. More than a billion are sold in the U.S. each year. They can't be recycled. A more earth-friendly choice is to buy food in packaging that can be reused. It's not as bad for the environment.
Find a way to turn food waste into compost instead of dumping it into a landfill. Compost turns waste food into nutrient rich soil which grows nutrient-rich food. Each year the US uses billions of plastic bags. They will sit in landfills a long, long time, without breaking down.
Green dryer sheets?
Are you using toxic dryer sheets? Instead, try filling an undyed cotton drawstring sachet with your favorite organic herb and toss that in with your drying clothes, or add a few drops of essential oils on a hankie.
How about some simple solutions for safer art supplies?
Make your own modeling clay out of flour, water, salt, food coloring, cooking oil and cream of tartar. Shop for soy crayons! First made in 1997, some are made of 85% soybean oil and sold mainly in the US. They are smoother to use and don't flake. Colors are brighter and they are safer for children and the environment. Made from renewable resources, they are even completely biodegradable. So, design your next crayon art from soy and use recycled paper!
Earth-friendly soap?
Try some antibacterial products made from plant oils, or switch from chlorine-based bleach to a hydrogen-based eco-bleach. It's better for the environment.
House plant air cleaners?
Grow some house plants to freshen and clean the air in your home. They help to protect against toxins such as: Ammonia, formaldehyde and benezene. In our search for more ways to renew and respect the earth we will become healthier and happier in the process! There are earth-friendly products out there, we just have to look and become aware of the many choices offered.

Post a CommentI've commented on this before, but mention ought to be made of just about the biggest dump-polluter of all -- Disposable Diapers. If these were made environmentally friendly, a really major improvement would result.
We all can be doing more to help the environment. Great ideas!
We recycle, plus I like to redo, repurpose, remake things! Great tips :)
We compost and we also, get this glass, cardboard, metal, aluminum, paper, plastics (num's 1-4), even junk mail, so I love the idea that we go downt one bag ever two weeks instead of 2 or more bags every week. Great ideas here Rue.
I know I should be doing a lot more. I think you've inspired me to start back up on my plastic recycling.
This is a great eye opening article! Good job!
Yes, it is a shame -- but it is a question manufacturers would even do better to ask themselves.
Nice tips, Rue. When I read your title I thought "Too much!" cheers ;)
