How to Get Mud Stains Out of Clothing

TommiH
When I was little and playing at a friend's house, my friend and I would have a bad habit of getting ourselves covered in mud. I am talking head to toe in mud. All over our clothes! It was horrible.

As my friend's mom went into a panic in attempt to get us clean, she found that just washing our clothes did not remove the mud stains. She then called her mom who gave her great advice on a classic way to get these stains out. Now I get the privilege of passing this knowledge to you.

Things you will need:
A potato (uncooked)

1 cup baking soda

1 cup Borax©

Access to cool water

Step 1 - First you are going to need to prepare the clothes. Make sure you have all big globs of mud off the clothing. You do not want to rub the mud to get off the globs because you will get a more set in stain and it will be harder to get the stain out. You can remove the mud globs by taking a butter knife and use the flat part to scrap the mud off.

Step 2 - Now you are going to get out your uncooked potato. Cut the potato so the raw inside is showing. You are going to rub the potato over the stain (use the part of the potato where the inside is showing from the cut. This is where all the juices will be that you need to help get rid of the stain.) Do not do anything to clothing for about 5 minutes after you rub the potato on the stain. This will give the juices a chance to soak in.

Step 3- Mix up the mud stain solution using 4 cups of hot or warm water, 1 cup baking soda, and 1 cup Borax©. Mix this solution together in a large pan or anything big enough to hold the clothing you need to let soak. You can even mix this together in your washer and let the clothes sit in there. Just turn your dial to spin when it is time to drain the water. Let the clothing sit in the mud cleaning solution for about 2 hours.

Step 4- After you have prepared the clothing to be washed by going thru all 3 steps above, you can proceed to wash the clothing. You may not want to wash any other clothes items that do not have mud on them because you could end up spreading the mud. Just wash the mud clothing separately. Wash as you normally would.

And that is how you remove mud from clothing. Good luck!
