How Multiple Sclerosis Sufferers Can Cope with Fatigue

Reina Brown
Fatigue is one of the most common problems that Multiple Sclerosis sufferers will contend with. When it strikes, it is unpleasant in more ways than one. First of all, the fatigue makes you feel horrible, as you do not have the energy that you once had. Secondly, you watch all of the things pile up on your plate that need to get done; however, you are not sure where you will get the energy to complete these tasks. And thirdly, you can become depressed because you feel inadequate, since the fatigue makes you feel run down to the point of being able to do only very little. If you are a sufferer of Multiple sclerosis, and you are contending with a bout of fatigue, here are some strategies that you can employ to help you to cope with the fatigue and feel better about yourself.

Why Multiple Sclerosis Sufferers Must Prioritize

Since the fatigue that comes with Multiple Sclerosis robs a person of strength and vitality in most cases, prioritizing is key. You'll need to think about what activities and tasks you have that can afford to be put on the back burner and which ones must be done right away. This is critical because when you try to look at everything, it can get overwhelming very quickly, and this is where depression comes in. You look at all that needs to get done, everything is looming before you, and you feel hopeless and worthless about the whole situation because you do not know any way at all that you are going to come out of it. You have no idea where you will get the energy, hence the importance of prioritizing.

Why Banking on Your Energy is important with Multiple Sclerosis

Because multiple Sclerosis has now zapped you of your energy, you need to bank on the energy that you do have. You need to think of the time of day when you are experiencing the least fatigue, and your energy is at its peak. For most Multiple Sclerosis sufferers, the fatigue starts to set in around midday, and energy seems to be at its peak in the morning. On the other hand, it could be different for you. Once you assess the time of day when you will have the most energy, you'll need to plan your activities and tasks that will require you to exert yourself during this period, such as house cleaning or running errands. The tasks that require little effort and that you can do from a sitting or lying position can be planned during the time when you are starting to lose energy. These tasks can include writing checks, paying bills, and other correspondence, such as calling doctors and handling other business over the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet. With the proper planning, these minute tasks can be done from the bed.

How You as a Multiple Sclerosis Sufferer Can Preserve Your Strength

When you have Multiple Sclerosis, it is very important that you do everything in your power to preserve your energy. Set up your house in such a way that will require you to exert little energy. For instance, put objects that you'd normally have to reach for in lower places or at eye level, so that you do not have to bend down as much or reach high above your head. You'd be surprised, but these little things could zap your energy fast, especially if you only have but so much to work with. Nonetheless, if you employ these strategies, it will offset the fatigue a bit and enable you to get a lot more done compared to if you do not make the most of what you have.

How Changing Your Attitude Can Help When Fatigue Strikes

Now that Multiple Sclerosis has created some difficult circumstances, such as the fatigue, you will need to change your attitude about everything and lower your expectations. Doing this will enable you to not only have a healthier outlook on life, as you will not be so upset and depressed when some things do not get done, you will know that you are giving it your best shot. You will not feel the need to be so hard on yourself when you do not quite meet the mark. You will also be better able to come to acceptance with your new circumstances and be at peace with yourself.

Fatigue can be one of the most unpleasant symptoms to contend with when suffering from Multiple Sclerosis; however, with a few simple tricks up your sleeve, you can manage it. It will become like anything else in life that you can problem solve and conquer.
