How MySpace Can Effect The 2008 Presidential Election

Candidates Recognize How the Social Networking Site Can Alter Their Candidacies

The Presidential Election of 2008 as a new hurdle to jump that no other Presidential Election has ever come to - MySpace. The 2008 Election may end up being won, or lost by a candidate's ability to successfully use the website.

There are thousands of users on MySpace that have politically influenced pages. These sites could be tapped into for the benefit of gathering votes for one candidate or another.

There are also hundreds of MySpace groups that were solely created for the progression of one type of political thought or another. The candidates will need to reach out to these groups if they wish to have a hold on the site.

Many candidates, such as Ron Paul have already made an attempt to reach out to the MySpace community. A simple search of Ron Paul's name on the site will turn up hundreds of pages that show support for the little-known candidate. Many insiders have also stated that they believe that Ron Paul is gaining popularity solely on the fact that he had the first camp to reach out to the MySpace community.

Many other candidates have begun to follow Ron Paul's lead. Many of the candidates will be creating personal pages that will be used to gather up votes from the MySpace community.

None of the other candidates have been able to gain the following that Ron Paul has on MySpace, but many are gaining quickly. As other candidates begin to fall into line, the election may be decided by the number of posted friends that a candidate has.

MySpace, unlike many other forms of media, can be a great tool for free advertising. Granted, many of the candidates will attempt to buy commercial space on the site, but they also need to use the free communication benefits of the site.

This is a tool that any of the candidates can use to directly interact with the people. Many young voters supported President Bill Clinton because of the fact that he had question and answer sessions on MTV. A candidate that communicates directly with young voters will most likely be the candidate that receives their vote.

If a candidate does not make a move to use MySpace will show many young voters that their vote is unimportant for the candidate. If a voter does not feel that their vote is meaningful, that voter will not make their way to the polls.

Ron Paul will be remembered as the first candidate to successfully put his name out there for the Presidential Election on MySpace. All of the other candidates are going to have to play catch-up if they are interested in helping themselves to gain the Presidency.

Myspace, if it does have any impact in any election cycle, will prove itself this year. Its one thing to support a candidate when your sitting at home, breazing through some light reading on the candidate and the issues, but its a different thing to actually go out and vote/caucus. Theres no question the internet has the power to influence elections, its only that myspace is still young and theres nothing to go by in predicting its political relevance.

I think Ron Paul's strong MySpace presence didn't originate from any concentrated effort on his part, but instead from the people who are alarmed at what is going on in this country. Ron Paul has simply been a man of unwaivering principle, offering us a record of consistency and proof of his respect for and adherence to the U. S. Constitution. It is the people that are choosing him and not him selling himself as a candidate. That to me is the best thing about Ron Paul running for President.
