How to Name a Sheep

Lee Leon

There's many names to give a sheep, so let me give a few
There's Wegglechuck and Paggerbog and good old Wolgergrew
Good sheepie names and every one is full of sheepish charm
And character well recognised on any rural farm

They say the name you give a sheep is his and his alone
And it may be the only thing that sheep will ever own
So name not just the outer sheep but also that inside
And give that sheep a sheepie name that he can wear with pride

Don't call him Dave or Sam or Pete or Roy or Bob or Spot,
Names quickly said and just as quick are easily forgot
Instead give him a name to last, to fill his sheepie mind
A name a little sheep will feel was just for him designed

But do not make the name too long as many think they can
Remember that a little sheep has short attention span
So not too many syllables a sheep name should entail
With more than three, the memory of any sheep will fail

So, Treechum or Woolgoblin will name a sheepie well
Or maybe Wokflock or Nipfleece or call him Ogglefell
But before you name your sheep apply this final rule:
Pick a name which, shouted loud, won't make you look a fool!

I wanted to be a serious writer - unfortunately my muse is a small and not completely sane sheep - but what can you do? It's hard to explain, but that's life and I guess someone has to do it!  View profile
