One easy way is to simply put lemon juice in your hair and go out in the sun. Apply all over your hair for an overall effect, or on a few strands for some sprinkled highlights. This method is not visible right away so it makes some give up easy, but give it some time and after a few days of doing this you will start to see results.
Another effective technique is to do the same as with the lemon but using chamomile instead, or for more lighting power, go ahead and use both chamomile and lemon. You can also look for shampoos that contain chamomile in the ingredients, or ones that are formulated for blonde hair shades, which will boost the effect even more. Some good picks include Pantene Blonde Expressions and John Frieda Sheer Blonde shampoos and conditioners.
A more radical approach to lighter hair is using Sun In Highlighter. Most people have good results with this, but some claim it turns their hair orange. I think it is best if used on lighter hair shades no darker than light brown to get more natural looking results. The effective ingredients in Sun In are the lemon and hydrogen peroxide. Of course you can always just add hydrogen peroxide to the lemon and chamomile mixture from earlier, but I wouldn't recommend it since you could end up using too much and really messing up your hair. It is safer to use it in products where it has been professionally mixed in, like in Sun In, so that you minimize the chance for damage.
In short, if you use the lemon, chamomile and enhancing shampoos you should see subtle highlights within a few days with stronger and more obvious hues appearing the more you apply them on your hair. With the Sun In you'll see results after using it for one day. You can also use a bit of Sun In to kick start the highlight process and then just apply the shampoos and/or the lemon and chamomile to achieve and maintain the desired highlight effect.
Try these methods and you are on your way to regaining that youthful blonde hair again and enjoy natural sun induced highlights once more.
