How to Make Natural Disinfectants

Patti Winters
Commercial disinfectants can be made with toxic and unhealthy chemicals you would never want around your family. Learn how to make them yourself with common household items. These alternatives are healthier for both your family and your wallet.

INGREDIENTS:

Castile Soap
Tea Tree Oil
White Vinegar
Borax
Essential Oil
Lemon Juice
Isopropyl Alcohol
Mouthwash

RECIPE 1:

Fill a 16 ounce spray bottle almost to the top with water. Add 3 tablespoons of castile soap and 20 - 30 drops of tea tree oil, and shake to mix. The castile soap and tea tree oil can be found in a health food store. Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic qualities. This is great to use during flu season on doorknobs, sink handles, phones, and other commonly handled surfaces.

RECIPE 2:

Spray full strength white vinegar around bathroom or kitchen to kill germs, then wipe with clean, damp cloth.

RECIPE 3:

Combine 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon full strength vinegar to clean and disinfect surfaces.

RECIPE 4:

Combine 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon hot water. Add a few sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary or lavender. Steep for 10 minutes then remove herbs and cool. Store in a plastic spray bottle.

NOTE: Essential oils can be used instead of fresh herbs.

RECIPE 5:

Combine 2 tablespoons borax, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 2 cups hot water. Combine the borax and lemon juice with the water in a spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial all-purpose cleaner.

RECIPE 6:

Isopropyl Alcohol is an excellent disinfectant. Sponge on and allow todry. Use in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves.
