How to Have a Natural Labor

Belle Story
What are the benefits of a natural labor? Natural labor is healthier for you and healthier for your baby! You don't risk complications drugs can cause. It also gives you a sense of accomplishment; natural labor is a real challenge!

Women who hire doulas have more successful natural labors. Hiring a doula lets you relax. Many women have trouble remembering the special breathing techniques learned in childbirth classes. The doula will guide you in your breathing or help you find a comfortable breathing pattern of your own. Doulas also offer physical support which helps lessen the pain of a natural labor. How do they do this? Doulas instruct you in different moving and stationary positions to speed up your labor. Some women believe they will only relax with an epidural; this isn't true. A doula can alleviate some of your fear and stress. For instance, you won't worry even if you forgot everything you learned in childbirth class. A doula is like a drug free epidural!

Another important benefit of a natural labor is easier breastfeeding. Your baby won't be sleepy from drugs. (Sleepy babies are extremely difficult to encourage to breastfeed.)

Drugs make you feel like a sick hospital patient since you're required to stay in bed; but with the natural route, you're free to walk around. You can even dance! (A dancing position is actually a real technique to use during labor.)

If the contractions scare you, just remember they have an amazing purpose. Each contraction is bringing your baby closer to entering the world! Embrace the pain. If you fight it or let it scare you, it can make your labor more painful or longer. Anxiety can actually stop your body from doing what it is supposed to do. Try whispering to yourself, "Bring on the contractions!" (Repeating affirmations during contractions may give you the strength to continue without pain medication.)

Choose a labor partner who supports your goal of a natural labor. It helps to have a cheerleader! Its a known fact people are influenced by the people who surround them. Consider having instrumental music in your room. It can help you to relax, focus and let your body do what it needs to do. Having the lights down will also add to your peaceful environment.

Don't be afraid to speak up during labor. Be clear about your needs and wants. This is not the time to worry about hurting anyone's feelings. They will understand you're a women in labor; a woman without any drugs to help her cope! If something will make you feel better or make things more comfortable for you, ask for it!
