How to Negotiate - Be a Better Negotiator

Top Tips, Ideas and Ways to Improve Your Negotiation Skills

L J Pearce
Most people negotiate on a day to day basis, be it negotiating a pay rise or negotiating a new loan, negotiating is all about give and take. Here are a few ways, tips and ideas as to how you can be a better negotiator.

1. Go in with a plan of action. Decide what you want and why and then go for it. Its always best to ask for a bit more than you want then you can settle on a deal and actually get what you wanted in the first place.

2. Be clear, concise and straight to the point when negotiating. No one wants to hear your life story and nobody wants to be taken round every house, so don't talk rubbish.

3. Don't accept the first offer you get or receive. Negotiation is always about more than one party so be prepared to give and take a little bit - Who knows you might be able to negotiate an even better deal or offer.

4. Know your facts and information. Knowledge is a powerful tool so make sure you use it when it comes to negotiation. Keep on top of your game.

5. Don't be too keen to get the deal done there and then. Negotiation and negotiating can often be lengthy processes, so don't rush, pace yourself and take your time. Don't rush into something you might or could later regret.

6. Be trustworthy. Nobody wants to negotiate or agree deals with people who perhaps can't be trusted so be trustworthy, make sure the other party or parties know that they can trust you.

7. Be valuable and provide value. When negotiating value is a good bargaining tool, so provide the best value for money or value in other areas that you can.

8. Always give just what you would like to receive - by this I mean if you would like to receive value for money then provide a valuable service or offer.

TOP TIP: Remember its all about giving and taking, negotiating is a two way street, so don't be discouraged if you don't always get what you want first time, simply keep negotiating until you get what you want or where you want to be.

I wish you every success and the best of luck when it comes to negotiating. I hope you have found this article useful and helpful and I hope it helps you when you are negotiating.
